Main duties of the job

University Hospital Southampton is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Sonographer to join our friendly team as a Band 8 Lead Educational Sonographer. This is an exciting opportunity to take a leading role in the education and development of our ultrasound workforce.

The successful candidate will be responsible for shaping and delivering high-quality training and fostering a supportive learning environment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Support and supervise a range of learning activities in practice.
  • Demonstrate excellent leadership skills, including decision-making and staff support.
  • Support colleagues to promote learning and create an excellent learning environment.
  • Maintain sound knowledge of all areas of governance and national/international guidance for ultrasound imaging.
  • Understand the work practices of other departments with which radiology interfaces.

Qualifications, knowledge, and experience
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Ultrasound
  • Appropriate Professional Registration (e.g., HCPC, NMC)
  • Significant post-qualification experience in at least two ultrasound areas, including abdominal imaging.
  • Evidence of leadership in practice and supporting colleagues’ learning.
  • Equipment super-user within your area of specialty.
  • Knowledge of imaging systems and governance in ultrasound.
  • Ability to interpret scans, provide diagnostic reports, and understand clinician requirements.
  • Evidence of CPD, training material creation, and research or audit presentations.
  • Previous management or supervisory experience.
  • Understanding and experience of systems leadership.
