Job summary

SP Energy Networks, part of the Iberdrola Group, is hiring for Lead Design Engineer (x6) in Cambuslang on a permanent hybrid basis. Salary starts from £60,800 to £79,000 with a 15/09/26 closing date, delivering innovative solutions for transmission networks and renewables while mentoring engineers.

Responsibilities include feasibility studies, budget estimates, ensuring regulatory compliance, and collaborating across planning, project teams, and safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Engineering or HND with significant relevant experience.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership.
  • Experience in the design and delivery of electrical infrastructure projects.
  • Strong understanding of transmission network equipment and its operation and maintenance.
  • Experience applying CDM regulations and Health & Safety best practice within a design environment.
  • Knowledge of innovative engineering technologies and sustainable engineering solutions.
  • Experience using BIM within transmission or substation design projects.

  • Contribute to the development of engineering standards, policies and best practice.
  • Mentor and support engineers across the wider team.

What you’ll be doing

The Lead Design Engineer will develop and assess concept engineering solutions for the transmission network, providing specialist technical guidance and support across a range of engineering disciplines. Working closely with Network Planning, Regulation and Project teams, the role will help shape investment decisions and deliver innovative, value-driven solutions that reduce asset lifecycle costs.

What you’ll bring
  • Degree in Engineering, or HND with significant relevant experience.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership.
  • Experience in the design and delivery of electrical infrastructure projects.
  • Strong understanding of transmission network equipment and its operation and maintenance.
  • Experience applying CDM regulations and Health & Safety best practice within a design environment.
  • Knowledge of innovative engineering technologies and sustainable engineering solutions.
  • Experience using BIM within transmission or substation design projects.
  • Technical expertise in one or more areas including substations, switchgear, transformers, overhead lines, cables, protection and control systems.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to solve complex engineering challenges.
  • Minimum Criteria Engineering Degree or HND with relevant industry experience.
  • Experience in electrical substation or circuit design for infrastructure projects.
  • Full UK driving licence.
