Job summary

Very is seeking a Principal Data Engineer to be a hands-on technical expert within the Data Enablement team, at the heart of our data transformation.

You'll work across initiatives, partnering with Engineering Managers, Product Managers, and other senior engineers to solve complex problems, guide evolution of our platform, and mentor others while shaping engineering standards and best practices. This role offers flexible, hybrid working and opportunities to influence data strategy at Very.

Qualifications

• Experience building and supporting production data solutions.
• Strong knowledge of AWS services (S3, EKS, Lambda, SNS, EventBridge, IAM).
• Proficient in Python and SQL; Java or Scala beneficial.
• Experience with data lakes, warehouses, Lakehouse technologies.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership across multiple teams and initiatives.
• Design scalable, resilient, and secure data architectures.
• Build and evolve cloud-native data platforms and services.
• Lead the design and implementation of complex data engineering solutions.
• Drive performance, scalability, reliability, and cost optimisation.
• Set engineering standards through code reviews and best practices.
• Coach and mentor engineers and provide technical direction.
• Collaborate with Product, Platform, and Architecture teams.
• Lead investigations into production issues and drive long-term improvements.
• Identify risks and opportunities to shape platform roadmap.
