Job summary

First Group is seeking an experienced engineer to join our team as a Working Charge Hand at Hounslow Heath Garage. You will supervise workshop staff, ensure vehicles meet TfL/VOSA standards, and keep a steady flow of reliable buses ready for service.

You will respond quickly to breakdowns, oversee repairs and MOT documentation, and liaise with controllers and suppliers to maintain smooth operations. A PSV licence and supervisory background are essential.

Qualifications

• Qualified Engineer with Apprenticeship/NVQ Level 3 or equivalent.
• Full UK driving licence (PSV preferred).
• Must have supervisory experience and be able to lead, motivate and coach.
• Previous bus industry experience is essential.
• Excellent communication and influencing skills are required.
• Solid knowledge of health & safety standards is necessary.
• Organised, methodical and calm under pressure.
• Flexible, self-motivated and a strong team player.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and support workshop staff during your shift.
• Ensure all vehicles meet Company, TfL and VOSA standards.
• Ensure enough clean, reliable vehicles are ready for service.
• Respond quickly to breakdowns, minimising lost mileage.
• Oversee repairs, inspections and documentation such as MOT and rota planners.
• Liaise with service controllers, stores and suppliers to keep everything running smoothly.
• Monitor quality, cost-effectiveness and timeliness of engineering work.
• Champion Health & Safety in the workplace.
