Job OverviewThe post holder will provide the highest level of scientific technical expertise in their laboratory discipline, applying this to ensure the smooth operation of the department's sections and in the education and training of all staff.
They will provide professional leadership and operational management support to the Pathology Centre Manager and are accountable for delivering a range of services within the Pathology Centre. This includes managing resources efficiently and effectively to deliver a safe, high-quality, and effective service in an environment of continuous improvement.
The role includes managing staff responsibilities such as recruitment, appraisal, training compliance, performance, and absence management.
The post holder is responsible for service delivery, ensuring compliance with regulatory bodies, and maintaining accreditation with UKAS. They are also the nominated site manager for the PRH Laboratory and the Pathology Training Lead.
Main duties of the job- Planning and organizing complex activities or programs requiring formulation and adjustment.
- Planning complex staff rotas and workforce management.
- Organizing a specialist discipline, including workload and staff management.
- Planning for the introduction of new methods of working.
- Having overall responsibility for effective management of service delivery in the Pathology department within their area of responsibility.
- Managing resources within the Pathology service delivery areas efficiently and effectively.
- Ensuring systems, work processes, and protocols are in place to deliver high-quality, safe services aligned with evidence-based practices and available resources.
- Analyzing and interpreting complex information to understand clinical and financial performance, and preparing options for improvement.
- Deputizing for the Pathology Centre Manager and/or Scientific Lead as required.
- Overseeing and monitoring the evaluation of new equipment, techniques, and research, advising on their introduction.
- Attending departmental meetings, providing input, and acting as Chair when required.

This role involves working closely with the Pathology leadership team across hospital sites to deliver a high-quality, patient-focused service.
It requires values-based leadership of a large team, including Biomedical Scientists, Support Staff, and Admin staff. The individual will contribute to the operational, workforce, and financial strategy of the department, collaborating with other Pathology leaders and colleagues.
