Job summary

Auto Skills UK is seeking an experienced LCV Technician to inspect, diagnose, repair, service and maintain light goods vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, ensuring roadworthiness and compliance with UK DVSA standards.

You will perform routine inspections, diagnose faults with specialist equipment, and carry out MOT preparation while keeping accurate service records. A Full UK driving licence and relevant qualifications are preferred.

Qualifications

  • Level 3 Diploma or NVQ Level 3 in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (or equivalent) is required.
  • Full UK Driving Licence is desirable.
  • MOT Tester qualification is desirable.
  • Hybrid/Electric Vehicle qualification is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, diagnose, repair, service, and maintain light goods vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes to ensure roadworthiness and compliance with DVSA standards.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic faults using specialist diagnostic equipment and identify wear or safety issues.
  • Carry out routine inspections and scheduled maintenance on light goods vehicles and prepare vehicles for MOT testing.
  • Record labour times, parts used, and maintain service histories and maintenance records.
  • Repair or replace components including engines, gearboxes, clutches, braking systems, steering and suspension, exhaust, cooling, fuel, timing belts/chains, wheels, driveshafts, batteries, and lighting systems.
  • Work safely in the workshop, interpret wiring diagrams, and ensure DVSA road worthiness standards are met.

Education

Level 3 Diploma or NVQ Level 3 in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (or equivalent)
Full UK Driving Licence (desirable)
MOT Tester qualification (desirable)
Hybrid/Electric Vehicle qualification (desirable)

Job description

LCV Technician

To inspect, diagnose, repair, service, and maintain light goods vehicles (up to 3.5 tonnes to ensure they remain roadworthy, reliable, safe, and compliant with all relevant UK legislation and manufacturer specifications. The mechanic will be responsible for delivering high-quality workmanship

Vehicle Inspection and Diagnostics
  • Carry out routine inspections and scheduled maintenance on light goods vehicles.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic faults using specialist diagnostic equipment.
  • Identify wear, defects, and safety-critical issues.
  • Perform road tests before and after repairs where appropriate.
Repairs and Maintenance
  • Service vehicles in accordance with manufacturer schedules.
  • Repair or replace faulty components including:
  • o Engines
  • o Gearboxes
  • o Clutches
  • o Braking systems
  • o Steering systems
  • o Suspension components
  • o Exhaust systems
  • o Cooling systems
  • o Fuel systems
  • o Timing belts/chains
  • o Wheel bearings
  • o Driveshafts
  • o Batteries and charging systems
  • o Lighting systems
Electrical and Electronic Systems
  • Diagnose and repair vehicle electrical faults.
  • Repair wiring, sensors, ECUs, alternators, starter motors, and lighting circuits.
  • Use manufacturer-approved diagnostic software to reset service indicators and calibrate vehicle systems.
MOT Preparation
  • Prepare vehicles for MOT testing.
  • Rectify MOT failures efficiently.
  • Ensure vehicles meet current DVSA road worthiness standards.
Record Keeping
  • Complete job cards accurately.
  • Record labour times and parts used.
  • Report additional defects found during repairs.
  • Maintain service histories and maintenance records.
Workshop Responsibilities
  • Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment.
  • Ensure workshop tools and equipment are correctly maintained.
  • Use specialist equipment safely and correctly.
  • Dispose of waste oils, tyres, batteries, and hazardous materials in accordance with environmental regulations.
  • Excellent understanding of petrol, diesel, and hybrid vehicle systems.
  • Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills.
  • Ability to interpret wiring diagrams and technical manuals.
  • Knowledge of DVSA road worthiness standards.
  • Good understanding of vehicle servicing schedules.
  • Competent in using electronic diagnostic equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Good communication and organisational skills.
Qualifications
  • Level 3 Diploma or NVQ Level 3 in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (or equivalent).
  • Full UK Driving Licence (desirable ).
  • MOT Tester qualification (desirable).
  • Hybrid/Electric Vehicle qualification (desirable).
Experience
  • Previous experience working as a Light Vehicle Mechanic.
  • Experience diagnosing complex mechanical and electrical faults.
  • Experience servicing and repairing a range of commercial vans and light goods vehicles.
  • Familiarity with manufacturer repair procedures and diagnostic systems.
