As an LAS FY1 Doctor in General Surgery at MKUH, you will work as part of a supportive surgical team delivering safe and effective care to both elective and emergency patients. Under the supervision of senior clinicians, you will take histories, examine patients, and contribute to daily ward management, ensuring that any changes in a patient's condition are recognised and escalated appropriately.
Your role will involve assessing acutely unwell patients, carrying out initial management plans, and supporting the wider team with clinical tasks, investigations, and treatment pathways. You will participate in ward rounds, assist in surgical admissions, and contribute to the smooth flow of patients through the service.
Communication is a vital part of this position. You will be expected to maintain accurate documentation, hand over clearly to colleagues, and work closely with nurses, allied health professionals, and other specialties to coordinate patient care. You will also interact with patients and their families, providing updates and supporting them through their surgical journey.
Professionalism and teamwork are central to the role. You will be encouraged to manage your time effectively, prioritise competing tasks, and develop confidence in decision making while knowing when to seek senior input. The post provides the opportunity to build core foundation-level skills, develop good clinical judgement, and contribute positively to the functioning of a busy surgical department.
A commitment to high-quality patient care is expected. Applicants should demonstrate understanding of clinical governance, awareness of risk, recognition of their own limits, and engagement in learning from incidents. Evidence of participation in audit and an interest in teaching or supporting the development of others is desirable and will strengthen your application.
This role is designed to support your development while ensuring high standards of patient care. You will be part of an environment committed to learning, reflection, and continuous improvement, with access to supervision, feedback, and teaching opportunities throughout your placement.
Success here comes from curiosity, teamwork, and a proactive approach to learning. You'll thrive if you're motivated to sharpen your clinical judgement, communicate well under pressure, and take ownership of your progression with guidance from approachable senior colleagues.
You must have the right to live and work in the UK. If you require a visa to work, please note that we are currently unable to support sponsorship requests for this role.
At MKUH, you'll join a friendly, forward-thinking environment where your contribution is valued and your development matters. If you're looking for a place to learn quickly, feel supported, and make a real impact on patient care, this is the role for you.
