Job summary

Mary Lyon Centre at MRC Harwell is seeking a hands-on Animal Care Assistant to ensure high standards of husbandry and to perform procedures under the Animals (SPS) Act. You will maintain cages, monitor health, keep records, and follow SOPs, contributing to advancing medical research.

The role requires attention to detail, ability to work in a team, and willingness to work overtime to cover animal requirements. On-site at Harwell, 36 hours/week, fixed term until 31 March 2028.

Qualifications

• 5 GCSEs or equivalent at grade C or above.
• Institute of Animal Technology Level 2 Diploma in Laboratory Animal Science and Technology.
• Home Office Licence.
• Experience with animals and basic animal husbandry.

Responsibilities

• Checking the health and welfare of experimental mice.
• Cleaning and watering of animal cages.
• Addressing the welfare needs of mouse colonies.
• Maintaining cleanliness in the animal rooms.
• Computerised record keeping.
• Reading and adhering to SOPs and risk assessments.
• Taking samples for genotyping.
