Lab Technician REQ1727 (Maternity Cover - FTC 12 Months)

Aims of Job/Job Purpose

We are looking to hire a Lab Technician to work at our Bordesley Green Campus on a full-time fixed-term contract. The post-holder will provide technical support for science courses based in the Science and A-Level programme area, including supporting the science team to ensure effective and efficient curriculum delivery and keeping an accurate inventory of equipment and consumables.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities
  • Prepare materials for practical sessions.
  • Keep laboratories and clinics clean and tidy and maintain the prep room in an orderly condition.
  • Work alongside and support the senior technician and lecturers in all practical activities.
  • Advise lecturers as to alternative procedures where required.
  • Complete and update risk assessments for practical activities and COSHH records for all procedures.
  • Liaise with the local fire service and other relevant external parties in relation to radioactive materials.
  • Check equipment daily to ensure it is in safe working order; have a sound knowledge of health and safety in the lab.
  • Attend and contribute to the Divisional meetings and health and safety meetings; monitor health and safety in the science laboratories.
  • Undertake first aid duties and maintain updating of first aid qualifications as required.
  • Monitor and maintain stock control.
  • Support college open days and taster sessions.
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade and nature of the post.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Comply with internal and external quality standards and contribute to the College's strategic objectives.
  • Comply with college policies, procedures and health and safety requirements.
  • Support safeguarding and the promotion of students' welfare.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding College information and comply with Data Protection.
  • Participate in the College's appraisal scheme and undertake training as required.
  • Support and actively participate in the implementation of the College's Equal Opportunity policy.
