Job summary

The University of Sheffield is seeking a Support Technician to join the School's technical team. You will support teaching and research activities across the School, reporting to Senior Technicians and Technical Managers, and help maintain high safety and service standards.

You will work with academics, researchers and students to ensure smooth operation of laboratories, data presentation and equipment maintenance, while developing your professional skills within a collaborative environment.

Qualifications

• Experience of providing an effective and efficient technical support service in a research laboratory environment.
• Experience of supporting life sciences technologies such as cell culture, molecular biology or histology.
• Knowledge of safe working practices and Health & Safety in a laboratory or teaching environment.
• Effective written and verbal communication with academic, research and technical staff.
• Technical professional registration or willingness to work toward this.
• Ability to work well in a team and also independently.
• Ability to analyse and solve problems with longer-term implications.
• Ability to organise resources and plan work to tight deadlines.
• Experience in cell culture and aseptic technique.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical support on a range of issues across the School.
• Support general lab activities and basic lab management duties.
• Use and maintain general and specialist technical equipment.
• Provide high standard of customer service to staff, students and visitors.
• Present data and results to staff and students involved in the study.
• Plan and perform general laboratory maintenance and stock control.
• Maintain accurate records of teaching and research activities.
• Adhere to Health & Safety regulations and maintain documentation.
• Collaborate across the School to provide support as needed.
