Mitie is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Lab Support Assistant to join our laboratory operations team at the GSK Barnard Castle site on a 6 month Fixed Term Contract. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in science, laboratory operations, pharmaceutical manufacturing, or regulated environments.
As a Lab Support Assistant, you'll play a vital role in ensuring laboratories operate efficiently, safely, and compliantly. From preparing laboratory reagents and managing samples to supporting equipment checks and maintaining supplies, you'll help keep critical scientific activities running smoothly every day.
What You’ll Be Doing
Laboratory Support
- Preparing reagents, solutions, and mobile phases following approved procedures.
- Supporting laboratory housekeeping and organisation.
- Helping ensure laboratory activities run efficiently and to schedule.
Sample & Documentation Management
- Collecting and booking laboratory samples.
- Preparing samples and documentation for storage, archiving, or shipment.
- Maintaining accurate and audit-ready laboratory records.
Equipment Support
- Performing routine checks on laboratory equipment such as balances and pH meters.
- Monitoring laboratory fridges and freezers.
- Supporting calibration activities and equipment logistics.
Stock & Consumables Management
- Ordering, receiving, and replenishing laboratory supplies.
- Managing stock levels and inventory.
- Organising consumable storage areas.
Waste Management
- Supporting the safe disposal of laboratory waste.
- Handling specialist waste streams in accordance with site procedures.
- Assisting with laboratory glassware management and cleaning.

Essential
- GCSE/National level qualifications in English, Maths and a Science subject
- Good organisational and planning skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to follow procedures accurately
- Good communication skills
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
- Basic Microsoft Office skills
Desirable
- Previous laboratory experience
- Experience working in a regulated environment
- Awareness of GMP/GxP working practices
- Experience using SAP or similar systems
