Job summary

Uppingham School in Rutland is seeking a friendly Kitchen Assistant to join our catering team. You will help prepare and serve high-quality meals for pupils, staff and visitors, while maintaining rigorous standards of cleanliness, food safety and customer service.

No previous catering experience required; full training will be provided, with a positive attitude and willingness to learn being valued. This is a full-time, 5-out-of-7 days role, based on the School's needs, including early mornings,

Responsibilities

• Assist with the preparation and service of fresh, high-quality food.
• Support the kitchen and front-of-house teams during busy service periods.
• Maintain high standards of cleanliness and organisation across the kitchen and service areas.
• Provide friendly and professional service to pupils, staff and visitors.
• Operate tills and handle transactions accurately where required.
• Follow all food hygiene, allergen and food safety procedures.
• Maintain personal hygiene and cleanliness; follow Health & Safety procedures.

The Role

We are looking for a friendly, reliable and enthusiastic Kitchen Assistant to join the catering team at Uppingham School.

Working as part of a busy and supportive team, you'll help prepare and serve high-quality food for pupils, staff and visitors, while maintaining excellent standards of cleanliness, food safety and customer service.

No previous catering experience is essential. What matters most is a positive attitude, willingness to learn and pride in doing a great job. You'll receive training and support to help you develop your skills and build a career within catering.

Key ResponsibilitiesFood Preparation & Service

• Assist with the preparation and service of fresh, high-quality food.
• Support the kitchen and front-of-house teams during busy service periods.
• Help prepare food displays and maintain attractive, well-presented counters.
• Assist with setting up and clearing down dining and service areas.
• Provide friendly and professional service to pupils, staff and visitors.
• Operate tills and handle transactions accurately where required.

Kitchen Operations

• Maintain high standards of cleanliness and organisation across the kitchen and service areas.
• Wash and clean equipment, utensils and work areas as required.
• Store food safely and correctly, following stock rotation procedures.
• Support the wider kitchen team with deliveries, stock movement and general duties.
• Help minimise food waste and use ingredients responsibly.

Food Safety & Compliance

• Follow all food hygiene, allergen and food safety procedures.
• Maintain excellent standards of personal hygiene and cleanliness.
• Follow Health & Safety procedures and work safely at all times.
• Report any food safety, equipment or health and safety concerns promptly.
• Support the School and Compass commitment to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing.

Previous experience in a catering, hospitality or customer service role would be an advantage, but full training will be provided.

Working Pattern

This is a full-time role working 5 out of 7 days.

The working pattern will be based around the operational needs of the School and may include early mornings, evenings, weekends and occasional school events.
