Metro.co.uk is looking for a full-time Junior Social Media Editor to join our London team and learn how to help deliver news, features, sport, opinion and video to a fast-growing global audience.
The ideal candidate will have some initial experience working with social media in a news environment at a student or professional level, as well as an interest in politics, current affairs and showbiz, and sport which they’re looking to develop and grow at a national level in a fast-paced newsroom.
This role requires experience and knowledge of every major social platform, but most importantly an enthusiastic and a positive can-do attitude. You should be passionate about creating content for social media and have an engaging style.
We are a creative, dynamic social team used to creating engaging social first content as well as transforming our industry-leading on-site editorial into digestible multimedia content suitable for multiple audiences on multiple platforms.
Key Requirements
- A strong understanding of the fundamentals of journalism, including how stories are sourced, how they’re composed and how they’re distributed
- An interest in developing new ways to distribute our journalism to the public
- Understand where journalism, social, community management and digital content is heading
- Experience of creating engaging social posts and managing social accounts
- Familiarity with crafting engaging Instagram and Facebook posts
- Familiarity with social video / vertical video formats, including Instagram Reels
- Ability to create social first content
- An interest in learning about the power of analytics and audience demographics
- Ability to spot a story online and the confidence to relay that to the wider team and other desks
Skills And Experience
- Knowledge of social media, community management and of growing and engaging audiences through newsroom experience, student journalism or personal brand-building
- Experience with content editing tools like Canva
- Some initial experience of working within a news/media environment at a local or national level
- Understanding of the UK Editors’ Code of Practice, media and copyright law
- Willingness to work in a dynamic, fast-paced 24/7 news environment with flexibility to work unsociable hours as and when required
