Job summary

The Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced Senior Sister for the Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU) in Bath. The post supports general surgery, ENT and urology and contributes to a 24/7 Surgical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service with a focus on safe, patient-centered care.

You will lead and supervise the ward team, coordinate with site teams, bed managers and ED, and drive discharge planning in line with RUH policies.

Qualifications

Must hold UK NMC registration and maintain professional standards.
Experience in supervising and mentoring junior staff.
Ability to coordinate ward activities with other departments.

The Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU) is a busy and dynamic 16-bedded ward providing specialist care for patients requiring general surgery, ENT and urology services. In addition, the team delivers a Surgical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service, comprising a dedicated waiting area and eleven treatment trolleys, supporting patients who can be assessed and treated without the need for an overnight stay.
Operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, SAU offers a fast-paced and rewarding environment where multidisciplinary teams work closely together to deliver safe, efficient and high-quality patient care. Main duties of the job

To maintain accountability for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care within the framework of team nursing incorporating the Named Nurse initiative.
To co-ordinate the ward liaising with site team, bed managers, Emergency department and the on-call team.
To proactively co-ordinate the patients’ discharge arrangements in accordance with RUH Discharge Policy ensuring involvement of other agencies as necessary.
To proactively facilitate the flow of patients out of the Emergency from SAU to other wards when beds are allocated.
To promote a patient focused approach to care in collaboration with all relevant health professionals.
To provide information thus enabling patients to make choices about adopting a healthier lifestyle.
To ensure that all clinical documentation is completed correctly by members of the … nursing team.
To maintain a safe ward/department environment.
To assist in the establishment and monitoring of protocols/care pathways.
To promote and maintain effective communication within the ward/department, GPs and community staff and other hospitals with regard to ongoing patient care.
To maintain patient confidentiality and ensure all staff understand the relevance of this.
To supervise junior staff in the delivery of care, through effective monitoring, mentoring, clinical supervision and reflective practice.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

To assist in promoting and maintaining an effective learning environment for staff, acting as a facilitator in the supervision and teaching of staff.
To ensure that all new starters complete the Trust induction programme.
To be responsible for developing and sustaining own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness in accordance with NMC revalidation requirements and to maintain a professional profile and Personal Development Programme.
To participate in the appraisal of staff at least annually, addressing development needs and monitoring performance.
To assist in establishing programmes of clinical supervision as appropriate.
To work with the ward team, Clinical Manager and Practice Development Department in developing and implementing nursing practice.
To participate in the recruitment and selection process, working positively towards retention of staff.
