Not sure what you are doing from August 2025? Feeling you need time to evaluate your future but want to work and do something that makes your CV stronger?
We recognise that there is a lot of uncertainty and hope that we can help. Clinical time spent in an Emergency Department is always useful and can help you become a more decisive and experienced clinician. We are particularly keen to develop doctors interested in Emergency Medicine as a career, especially those taking EM exams or aiming for formal EM training. However, many future careers can be viewed through Emergency Medicine, and we are happy to support skill and connection development across all areas. The EM team is friendly, hardworking, and very supportive. The department has been rated as Outstanding by the CQC. We strive to deliver excellent patient care through teamwork. Each post is for 6 months with a high likelihood of extension. We also offer a formal introductory programme for doctors new to the NHS but with significant Emergency Medicine experience.
You should have proven hospital medicine experience in the NHS, including EM. Short-term locums and clinical attachments are not acceptable. This position is suitable as a first UK post only if you have worked for at least 24 months in EM full-time.
Candidates will not be shortlisted unless they meet these criteria.
The post is 80% clinical and 20% non-clinical, allowing approximately 2 days every two weeks for special interests such as QIP, research, teaching, or other specialist interests like paediatrics. Flexibility is available if you have a specific project. Due to our self-rostering system, flexible or individualised rotas are possible.
Post holders will participate in a middle tier of doctors, supervised by senior trainees and helping supervise FY2s. You will not be in charge of the department but will gain experience in a safe, busy environment. The ED is led by 21 Adult and 6 Paediatric Emergency Consultants, seeing over 140,000 patients annually, including from major events like the London Marathon.
You will join a friendly, supportive ED rated as Outstanding by the CQC. We aim to improve patient care collaboratively and seek passionate doctors to contribute ideas. We are committed to flexible working patterns to meet patient needs, including evenings and weekends. Equality of opportunity is our policy; we serve a diverse community.
Applicants must hold full GMC registration and have at least 1 year of post-registration experience, including a minimum of 4 months in Emergency Medicine. IELTS certification is required for non-native English speakers.
Purpose of the role
We seek doctors to join our team and contribute to patient care improvements. The role offers non-clinical time equivalent to 2 days every two weeks for personal development or CV enhancement. It is suitable for those taking time out of training or seeking a break before advanced training. Flexible rotas are available.
The team is friendly, supportive, and experienced, with a focus on career progression. Fellows assist consultants in patient management and supervise junior staff, working in a busy environment. Contribution to out-of-hours shifts, including nights and weekends, is essential.
Educational Program
Fellows can attend courses like ATLS, ALS, APLS, and conferences, with study leave provisions. They will participate in educational meetings, including handovers, departmental teaching, governance meetings, and grand rounds. The department offers exam-oriented teaching, with high success rates in RCEM exams.
Research within the Department
Active research opportunities are available, encouraging fellows to develop skills and projects in research.
