Job summary

Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust is expanding its Emergency Department team with a Trainee Junior Nurse Practitioner role, leading to a Trainee Advanced Practitioner. The 4-year fixed term starts at band 6 (first 12–18 months) while completing non‑medical prescribing, then progresses to band 7 and finally to a substantive band 8a post upon qualification.

Job overview

This is an exciting time to join the existing AP team in the Emergency Department here at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead and we are looking for a Trainee Junior Nurse Practitioner (leading to Trainee AP role) who is able to complement our existing team.

This post is for an initial 4 year fixed term period. The first 12-18 months are at band 6 while non‑medical prescribing course is completed. Upon completion, the postholder would progress to a band 7 trainee AP post while a qualification in advanced practice is completed (approximately 3 years), at which point the postholder would transition into a substantive AP post at band 8a.

Main duties of the job

To work autonomously but under close supervision in the planning and delivery of care and interventions of patients attending the Emergency Department including paediatrics and adults with specialities which include but are not limited to - trauma, resuscitation, mental health, medical, surgical, gynaecological and Minor Illness / Injury presentations.

  • To continuously improve clinical care standards in line with the clinical governance frameworkto ensure the highest quality of care is provide in the safest manner
  • To engage in education and training provided by Advanced Practitioners and medical staff relating to the effective management and delivery of care to patients within the Emergency Department.
  • To participate in the continuing improvement of services in line with the Trust objectives and assist the Advanced Practitioners in the delivery and development of the Emergency Department using evidence based practice to provide the highest standards of holistic care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated individual with experience of working within Emergency Department and also caring for both Adult & Paediatric patients. You will have already completed your Adult Clinical Skills course and be ready to embark on the Nurse Practitioner role, leading towards becoming a Trainee ACP once HEE funding and a University place is secured.

A relevant degree is essential to be considered for this post along with ALS and / or APLS provider status. You should also have a minimum of 5 years acute experience in order to fully appreciate the complexities of the role.

The Emergency Department offers all our Practitioners protected non-clinical and teaching time and you will be assigned an ACP Supervisor once you start the Trainee ACP role and will be expected to continue your development similar to that of other tACP’s.
