Role: Junior Synapse Data Engineer

Location: Blackburn, BB1 2FA

Hours: Full-Time / Permanent

Salary: £28,000 - £35,000

About the role

As a Junior Synapse Data Engineer, you will support the design, development, and maintenance of data pipelines using Microsoft Azure Synapse and related technologies. This entry-level role offers a hands-on opportunity to build foundational skills in a collaborative, data engineering environment.

You’ll work closely with a Senior Data Engineer and a supportive data team, gaining real-world experience across data integration, transformation, and pipeline management. This role is ideal for someone starting their career in data engineering or with initial experience in cloud platforms and data processing who is eager to learn and grow.

What you’ll be doing:

• Supporting the development and testing of data pipelines using Synapse, Data Factory, and Azure Data Lake.
• Performing basic SQL queries and data validation to ensure accuracy and consistency.
• Supporting the monitoring and troubleshooting of data pipeline performance and reliability issues.
• Helping to maintain up-to-date documentation for data processes, workflows, and implemented solutions.
• Actively participating in team sprints, stand-ups, and code reviews to build knowledge of development best practices.
• Shadowing senior data engineers to gain hands-on exposure to data architecture, design patterns, and scalable solutions.
• Following standards for data quality, security, and governance.

What we are looking for:

• Basic understanding of Microsoft Azure and Synapse
• Familiarity with SQL and a scripting language (e.g. Python)
• Strong willingness to learn and grow in the data engineering space
• Good attention to detail and communication skills
• Ability to follow guidance, take initiative, and collaborate within a team environment.
• Exposure to Data Factory, Azure Data Lake, or Power BI
• Experience with academic or personal projects involving data or cloud-based technologies.
• Awareness of data warehousing or ETL/ELT concepts
