Job Details

The appointment is to commence on 6th August 2025 for a fixed term of 6 months, extendable to 2 years upon mutual agreement between the Trust and the candidate. This post does not award a National Training Number and is not recognized as a 'training post'. Full GMC registration with a licence to practise is required. If the appointee does not have the right of residence in the UK, sponsorship will be necessary. The duties are equivalent to CT1/CT2 Level.

The successful candidate will join a department comprising eight specialist spinal Consultants, a senior clinical fellow, resident doctors (StR, GPVTS, and Foundation doctors), and a supported clinical nurse specialist. We are accredited by Eurospine as a Spine Centre for Excellence. The clinical work involves a wide range of spinal conditions, including deformity, lumbar and cervical degenerative conditions, trauma, infection, and tumour. Opportunities exist to gain experience in managing spinal injuries at the Princess Margaret Spinal Injuries Unit, located on the Northern General Hospital campus.

Main Duties

The post holder will support the spinal surgery service. There is an opportunity to participate in the general orthopaedic rota at Foundation/Core trainee level, subject to mutual agreement. The candidate will assist resident doctors in the daily management of spinal inpatients, with ample opportunities to assist in theatre, attend outpatient clinics, and engage in research projects.

  • Essential: Evidence of research, audit, or service review activity.

Qualifications

Clinical Experience
  • Essential: Experience in trauma and orthopaedics or neurosurgery at Foundation/CT level (minimum 4 months, maximum 18 months); NHS experience excluding clinical attachments.
  • Desirable: Experience of spinal surgery.
Teaching & Training
  • Essential: Experience teaching medical students and junior doctors.
CPD
  • Essential: Evidence of participation in CME/CPD within the last 12 months.
