Main duties of the jobThe department of Cardiology at St. George's is seeking to appoint a Junior Clinical Fellow (ST1-2) for 1 year fixed term to work as part of a busy unit.
The Department of Cardiology based in the Atkinson Morley Wing at St George's Hospital, deals with the full spectrum of adult cardiology.

The candidate will form part of a team of 9 cardiology ST1/2 doctors and 2 physicians associates responsible for the care of in-patients within the cardiology unit, working a shift system with a week of nights every 9 weeks (4 and 3 split), with prospective cover. The on-call specialty doctor is part of the cardiothoracic resuscitation team, and provides ward based-cover to the 3 cardiothoracic wards. The on call specialty doctor will be responsible for admitting cardiology referrals from the A and E department.
The candidate is responsible for the admission and preliminary management of elective and inter-hospitaltransfer patients. Each specialty doctor is assigned to a consultant team for regular ward rounds and 1-2-cardiology out-patients. There will be the opportunity to perform DC cardioversion for cardiac arrhythmias. There will be the opportunity to observe diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac catheterisation, the insertion of temporary and permanent pacemakers and implantable defibrillators, the insertion of intra-aortic balloon pumps, transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography. There may be the opportunity for further training in echocardiography and cardiac nuclear medicine for interested applicants. Continued cardiological education is maintained by weekly echocardiography meetings, weekly audit and mortality/morbidity meetings, and weekly angiographic meetings. In addition there is a regular registrar based clinical teaching session.
Participation in clinical audit is essential and there will be the opportunity to perform an audit project.
