Job summary

BBC Group and Public Services in Worcester is seeking a weekend newsreader to prepare and read bulletins and chase breaking stories, supporting the wider Hereford and Worcester Local Story Team across radio, online and TV in the region. You’ll read live bulletins on air and contribute to local coverage in a flexible, part-time schedule.

This 14-hour per week role offers opportunities for additional work and development within the BBC’s public service broadcasting network.

CONTRACT TYPE: Permanent - Part time ( 14 hours per week )
DEPARTMENT: BBC Nations and Regions
LOCATION: Worcester
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £28,000 - £33,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

This is a key on-air role that also acts as a great way to become part of the wider BBC Hereford and Worcester Local Story Team that provides stories across radio, online and TV in the region. As the weekend newsreader you will be responsible for preparing and reading bulletins and chasing breaking stories. You’ll also advise News Online and Midlands Today on any important developments on patch.

Even though this is a part-time role, there are opportunities for more work for those candidates who are interested.

  • You’ll be reading live bulletins into radio programmes.
  • You’ll also record bespoke local bulletins for Smart Speakers.
  • You’ll help to cover any breaking local stories – this could involve chasing information and recording interviews with guests.
  • You’ll flag our strongest stories to colleagues at TV, social media and online.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Experience of reading live bulletins with a good broadcasting voice.
  • Editorial skills – to understand the priorities and pitfalls of story selection.

DESIRABLE:

  • Social media experience – a working knowledge of social media platforms and how they can be best used to reach our audience.
  • Video/audio- an understanding of production and editing.
  • Creativity – the ability to generate great story ideas for use on local radio and in the digital space.
