Job Introduction

BBC Monitoring is seeking to recruit a Journalist to work as part of its team monitoring Russian media. Based in London, you'll produce content in English for BBCM’s website, other BBC platforms, and commercial customers.

You will be fluent in Russian and English, with excellent news writing and editing skills, the ability to translate accurately from broadcast and social media, and journalistic experience.

You will have a thorough knowledge of the Russian media environment, a keen understanding of Russian politics, and an interest in international affairs.

BBC Monitoring provides news and information based on our monitoring of open source media from over 150 countries in more than 70 languages.

It is an important part of the BBC's newsgathering operation, with journalists based in the UK and international offices, providing content for various BBC platforms.

At BBCM, we track, translate, summarize, and analyze local media sources to offer insights and understand global developments. Our extensive operation enables us to deliver insightful and reliable coverage of political, economic, security, and media news.

Our international perspective ensures we monitor broadcast, press, and social/digital media sources in multiple languages, especially where reliable news is scarce or where the BBC has no presence.

Our services are also provided to commercial clients and the UK and US governments.

Main Responsibilities

You will play a key role in meeting BBC Monitoring’s customer needs by identifying news and insights from Russian media across broadcast, print, online, and social platforms.

You will write engaging reports in English, including verbatim translations.

You will utilize various tools and techniques to mine media for information and story ideas, identify emerging trends, and contribute to planning coverage of key events.

You will work within a shift pattern, including some weekend work.

Are you the right candidate?
  • You have excellent monitoring and editing skills, capable of producing output that adheres to high journalistic standards and BBC editorial guidelines.
  • You possess journalistic experience with a strong news sense and the ability to identify stories relevant to BBCM’s audience.
  • You are fluent in Russian and English, with the ability to translate accurately and write idiomatic English.
  • You have a thorough knowledge of the Russian media environment, a keen understanding of Russian politics, and an interest in international affairs.
  • You are an excellent team player and communicator, enthusiastic about adopting new working methods and technologies.
