Job summary

Sainsbury's is seeking a Java Engineer in Greater London to design and develop high‑performance services using Java 17+, Spring Boot, and Maven. You will work on large-scale architectures across websites, apps, and microservices with a focus on scalable, cloud-native solutions.

You will contribute to the technical roadmap, collaborate with teams, and own components through the full SDLC, embracing DevSecOps and Lean practices while exploring emerging technologies.

Qualifications

• Strong expertise in Java and Spring Boot.
• Unit testing and TDD knowledge.
• Experience in software design across security, cloud, IaC, and CI/CD.
• Hands-on Kafka for event streaming and distributed architectures.
• Knowledge of cloud platforms and containerisation (Kubernetes).
• Advocacy for Agile/Lean delivery methodologies.
• Ownership of SDLC with DevSecOps practices.
• Curiosity about emerging technologies.
• Empathy, teamwork and supporting others to deliver quality outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop large-scale, high-performance services using Java (17+), Spring Boot, Maven, and related tools.
• Build and enhance websites, apps, microservices, and event-driven architectures.
• Contribute to the product technical roadmap.
• Work with cloud and container technologies, including Kubernetes on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
• Lead the design and support of internal frameworks that enhance wider engineering capabilities.
• Engineer across the full product lifecycle, including decommissioning.
• Consider cost, scalability, and support implications in all engineering decisions.
