Job summary

AMA Admin, on behalf of a Gateshead school, is recruiting Learning Support Assistants to work with pupils in SEN settings, including autism and SEMH. You will support small groups and 1:1 with emotional regulation, communication and life skills. September start, Monday to Friday, term-time only; full training provided.

Salary £107.71–£120 per day with easy transport access and on-site parking. This role offers hands-on experience in a supportive, multidisciplinary team and is ideal for graduates

We are recruiting Learning Support Assistants on behalf of a school in Gateshead. This role offers meaningful, hands-on experience supporting children and young people with autism, communication differences, social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), sensory needs and learning disabilities.

You will work within a small class team, providing personalised support to help pupils develop emotional regulation, positive behaviour strategies, communication skills and confidence, while promoting positive life choices and engagement with education.

This role starts in September , working Monday to Friday, term time only, making it ideal for graduates or support professionals seeking relevant experience.

Pay: £107.71 - £120 per day

The school is easily accessible with excellent transport links, and driving is advantageous, with on-site or nearby parking available.

You will gain experience in:
  • Supporting young people using trauma-informed and behaviour-focused approaches
  • Understanding risk factors, emotional triggers and behavioural responses
  • Working within a multi-disciplinary team (teachers, therapists and external professionals)
  • Promoting positive behaviour, accountability and self-regulation
  • Supporting pupils to develop life skills, resilience and decision-making
  • Managing challenging situations with calm, consistency and professionalism

Many people use this role as a stepping stone into careers within youth justice, criminal justice, probation services, policing, social work or safeguarding roles.

What you will be doing:
  • Supporting pupils on a 1:1 and small-group basis throughout the school day
  • Helping pupils develop positive behaviour strategies and emotional regulation
  • Supporting communication, independence and life skills
  • Assisting with personal care, feeding or mobility where required (full training provided)
  • Encouraging positive engagement in learning and social activitiesWorking closely with teachers and support professionals to follow individual support plans
  • Helping pupils remain safe, calm and engaged during the school day

We would love to hear from you if you have:
  • Experience in care, youth work, support work, mentoring or working with vulnerable individuals (paid or voluntary)
  • A genuine interest in criminal justice, youth justice, probation services or safeguarding
  • Patience, resilience and strong emotional intelligence
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build trust and positive relationships
  • The ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations
  • Willingness to support with personal care when required

You do not need prior school-based experience. Your commitment, empathy and motivation to support young people are what matter most.
