The Interim Commercial Project Manager brief

A high-value defence production programme is ramping up now and needs an experienced, SC cleared Interim Commercial Project Manager on site within weeks. You will take immediate ownership of delivery, win commitment from production, planning and quality, and drive progress on every customer order so that it ships on time and in full, with the opportunity to apply for the permanent role.

Why this interim role exists

Our client, a specialist high-technology manufacturer near Tewkesbury and part of a privately owned UK engineering group, has commissioned new equipment and a dedicated production area for a major UK defence customer. The product is qualified and volumes are rising. The business would rather have the right person in post now on a fixed term contract than leave the programme without an owner while a permanent search runs its course.

Your first 30 days as Interim Commercial Project Manager

In your first week you will take ownership of the programme schedule, walk every production area and establish exactly where each order stands. By the end of the first month you will have a recovery plan agreed with the Production Director for anything behind schedule, a reporting rhythm the Managing Director can rely on, and a working relationship with the customer's senior team, who visit site regularly and sometimes at short notice.

You will not need to be the technical expert. The Technical, Engineering and Production Directors provide that. You will need to get clear answers from them quickly, hold people to dates and handle difficult conversations with the customer calmly and professionally.

The terms

This Interim Commercial Project Manager role is a fixed term contract on the client's own payroll, paid pro rata to a salary of £60000 to £70000, depending on experience. It is not an umbrella or limited company assignment. As Interim Commercial Project Manager, you will have the opportunity to apply for the permanent Commercial Project Manager role. It suits a contractor between assignments, a recent service leaver, or a defence project manager who is free to move quickly.

Is this SC cleared interim role right for you?

You are an experienced project or programme manager from defence, the Ministry of Defence, the armed forces or a defence supply chain, and you can start within days or a few weeks. You have taken over programmes part way through, earned the confidence of demanding customers and delivered against hard production schedules. An engineering background is not required.

SC clearance and eligibility

This is an SC cleared role. Applicants must be sole UK nationals and must hold, or have previously held, security clearance above BPSS, typically SC or DV. The role is site based five days a week near junction 9 of the M5, within easy reach of Cheltenham, Gloucester, Worcester and Malvern.
