Job description

We are seeking an experienced and innovative Senior Integration Engineer to play a key role in the design, development and support of the Trust's integration platform and interoperability services. The post holder will utilise advanced integration technologies and engineering expertise to connect complex clinical and corporate systems, ensuring the secure, reliable and efficient exchange of information across the organisation and with external partners. This role will be instrumental in supporting the Trust's digital transformation agenda, delivering seamless interoperability and enabling the flow of information required to support patient care and operational efficiency. The post offers an opportunity to make a significant impact within an organisation where integrated digital services are essential to delivering high-quality healthcare. The role will contribute to the delivery of key strategic initiatives, including national interoperability programmes, Electronic Referral Service (e-RS) integration, Electronic Patient Record developments, and the wider modernisation of the Trust's digital infrastructure.

Technical Development & System Integration

• Lead the design, development and implementation of complex integration workflows to support clinical and operational needs across the Trust.
• Design, build, and optimise system interfaces using HL7, FHIR, XML, REST, SOAP, and MLLP protocols to ensure smooth and secure data exchange across platforms.
• Leverage XML technologies such as XPath and XSLT to transform, query, and validate structured data within integration workflows.
• Ensure all data exchanges are secure, reliable and adhere to NHS interoperability standards, including IG and GDPR compliance.
• Conduct thorough testing including integration, and regression to validate performance, stability, and scalability.
• Diagnose and resolve integration issues efficiently, minimising downtime and service disruption.
• Monitor system performance and proactively optimise integration engine processes for scalability and resilience.
• Monitor and address system alerts, implement upgrades, and support audit and compliance activities related to integration services.
• Manage all Integration Engine servers, ensuring high availability, performance, and reliability across systems including the Clinical Data Repository.

Integration Architecture & Documentation

• Define and maintain a robust integration architecture that supports the Trust's operational and clinical needs.
• Develop detailed technical designs, SOPs, and post-incident reports to support continuous improvement.
• Keep documentation up to date to minimise recurrence of integration issues and support future development.

Analysing and Judgement

• Independently exercise sound judgment in complex situations, requiring thorough analysis, and interpretation of patterns and anomalies in data.
• Analyse interface specifications from both sending and receiving systems to determine feasibility and interface methodology.
• Address complex interoperability challenges by developing solutions and recommending improvements to ensure seamless system integration.
• Analyse and independently identify complex problems within the interface software. Take appropriate course of action critical to the operation of the interface to remedy problems and issues identified.
• Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues.

Planning and Organising

• Plan and organise a wide range of complex activities and programmes, including ongoing initiatives, requiring the formulation and adjustment of plans and strategies.
• To plan and deliver the deployment of integration projects.
• To inform and make recommendations to support the Digital deployment and roll out project plans.
• To provide technical expertise for highly complex and multiple work stream projects.
• This role will require the organisation and planning of meetings and presentations to ensure full stakeholder liaison, and this is likely to be challenging when presented with tight delivery dates.
• It will also be necessary to organise a range of tasks and work packages and meetings to resolve risks and issues which may lead to the adjustment of plans.

Data Warehousing and Reporting

• Design, code, test and implement efficient and robust database schemas plus SQL Queries, Views, Stored Procedures, and Triggers as part of data warehouse development.
• Monitor database performance and troubleshoot issues proactively.
• Develop and maintain reports and dashboards using tools such as Power BI, Tableau, SSRS.

Operational Support & Monitoring

• Monitor interface activity daily to ensure uninterrupted service delivery and data integrity.
• Provide on-call technical support, coordinating effectively with the Digital Service Team and external suppliers during planned downtime / upgrades and unexpected disruptions.
• Responsible for the Trust Clinical Outcomes system.

Stakeholder Collaboration

• Oversee supplier management for the Trust Integration Engine ensuring effective governance, clear accountability, and a culture of professional collaboration.
• Engage with clinical stakeholders, third-party vendors, and technical teams to gather requirements, manage priorities, and deliver integration solutions that support clinical workflows.
• Report regularly on project progress, risks, and outcomes to ensure transparency and alignment across teams.
• Act as a key technical advisor during digital transformation initiatives such as system migrations, upgrades and procurements.
• Communicate complex integration concepts to non-technical stakeholders, fostering shared understanding and trust.
• Produce, analyse and interpret highly-complex statistical information (which will frequently be of a contentious nature) to groups of users (both internal and external) in a clear and understandable way.

Qualifications & Experience

• Specialist knowledge and demonstrable experience of designing, developing, and supporting interfaces using Integration Engines, including filters, translators, and communication points.
• In depth knowledge and experience of HL7, FHIR, XML, REST, SOAP, and MLLP protocols.
• Educated to degree level in Computer Science, Health Informatics, or a related technical discipline; or equivalent experience working in complex corporate IT operational environments.
• Evidence of continued professional development.
• Development of large databases using Microsoft SQL Server and integration engines.
• Knowledge of Mental Health Services.
