KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Requirements Elicitation & Analysis: Working with business sponsors and users to gather, clarify, and document business and system requirements for new processes or software features. This involves conducting interviews, workshops, and data analysis to understand business problems, identify specific business needs, and define the scope of solutions.
  • Process Mapping & Improvement:Analysing current business workflows and business processes to pinpoint inefficiencies or pain points, then proposing improvements or automation opportunities. The BA may create process flow diagrams and business process models to visualize current vs. target state processes and recommend optimisations aligned with ITIL service improvement practices.
  • Solution Definition & Documentation: Translating business needs into clear, actionable requirements for the technical teams. This can include writing business requirements documents (BRDs), functional specifications, user stories and use cases (for Agile projects).
  • Agile Collaboration: Playing an active role in the Agile development lifecycle (e.g. Scrum or Kanban processes). The Business Analyst typically works with Product Owners and development teams to refine the product backlog, elaborate on acceptance criteria for user stories, and ensure that the delivered software features meet the business requirements. You may also support iteration planning, backlog grooming, and sprint reviews to represent business interests and clarify requirements on behalf of stakeholders.
  • Testing & Validation: Collaborating with QA/Test teams and end-users to validate that solutions meet requirements and business objectives. The BA may help develop or review user acceptance test (UAT) scenarios and ensure traceability from requirements through to test cases (supporting requirements accuracy and minimal rework). They coordinate with stakeholders to get feedback on prototypes or early releases and adjust requirements as needed (iterative development).
  • Stakeholder Communication: Serving as the liaison between business sponsors and technical teams, keeping everyone aligned. This involves regular updates to business sponsors on project status, risks, and benefits, as well as negotiating priorities among different stakeholders. The role is expected to facilitate meetings or workshops (e.g. requirements gathering sessions, process review workshops) and ensure that stakeholder feedback is captured and addressed.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
  • Analytical Skills & Process Understanding: Ability to analyse complex business processes and data to identify issues, trends, and opportunities. The role must be adept at breaking down workflows and interpreting data (e.g. process metrics, reports) to support data-driven recommendations.
  • Communication & Stakeholder Management: Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. The BA must be able to communicate complex ideas in simple terms, whether drafting technical documentation or discussing changes with non-technical business stakeholders. Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills are needed to build consensus, manage expectations, and ensure different parties (business sponsors, end users, IT teams, vendors, etc.) remain engaged and informed.
  • Agile and ITIL Knowledge: Practical experience working in a Agile development environment is an advantage. The role will offer fast track training in Agile and ITIL systems, facilitating Agile practices like backlog grooming, sprint planning, and iterative release cycles. You will become familiar with Scrum or Kanban frameworks and the ability to create and manage user stories is expected. Training will be provided leading to a foundation qualification in ITIL service management,
Stakeholder Interactions (Business Sponsors & Teams):
  • This Business Analyst will have a high degree of interaction with business sponsors and various cross-functional teams. Business sponsors are typically senior stakeholders or process owners who want to achieve specific improvements; the BA’s job is to understand their vision and translate it into requirements.
  • The BA will work closely with these sponsors to clarify the business case and priorities, ensuring the proposed solutions truly meet the underlying business needs. Equally, the BA collaborates day-to-day with technical teams (developers, QA, project managers) to communicate requirements and reconcile any gaps between business expectations and technical constraints.
Typical Deliverables & Success Measures:
  • Documentation of Requirements and Processes: Comprehensive Business Requirements Documents (BRDs) or functional requirement specifications, detailing what the business needs and why. In Agile environments, this often takes the form of a prioritised product backlog with well-defined epics and user stories that include acceptance criteria. The BA may also produce process models or flowcharts illustrating current vs. target processes, use case diagrams, and impact assessments of proposed changes.
  • Business Cases & Feasibility Analyses: For larger initiatives, the BA might develop a business case document outlining the proposed solution’s benefits, costs, and risks, helping business sponsors decide whether to proceed. They could also prepare feasibility studies or option analyses, evaluating alternative solutions and their implications on technology and processes.
  • Evaluate Plans & User Acceptance Criteria: Often, BAs contribute to the creation of UAT plans or test cases tied to each requirement, to ensure that delivered solutions can be verified against the original needs. They may also compile training materials or user guides for new processes or systems, facilitating smooth handover to end-users.
