Job summary

The Telegraph in London is seeking an innovative Information Graphics Designer to join our Graphics team. You will transform complex data and stories into visually engaging graphics for print and digital formats, shaping the future of graphic journalism.

The role requires a strong portfolio, fluency in visual storytelling, and familiarity with editorial design principles. You will collaborate with editors, reporters, data journalists, designers, and developers to publish compelling content.

Qualifications

  • Advanced practice of graphic design fundamentals (Typography, colour perception, composition)
  • In-depth knowledge of editorial design and visual storytelling within publishing
  • Comprehensive understanding of graphic production on print and digital platforms
  • Cartography and geospatial analysis with QGIS/MapShaper
  • Proficient in data visualisation tools (Raw, DataWrapper)
  • Basic front-end skills (HTML/CSS/JS)
  • Strong user-focused and interface design experience (Figma)
  • Experience interpreting data to reveal trends and insights

Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to join a fast-paced creative visual team at The Telegraph. You will be joining the Graphics team where we continually look to transform information into compelling visual storytelling forms, underpinned by our graphic design and journalistic principles.

We want someone who is going to help shape the future of The Telegraph's graphic journalism using their creativity to engage our audience with informative content. The ideal candidate will be able to adapt their visual ideas to different narrative types and apply them utilising relevant digital and print formats.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create engaging information graphics for both print and digital platforms
  • Visually communicate complex subject matter in a clear and concise way
  • Develop new approaches for presenting stories on our publishing platforms
  • Work on breaking news, lead stories, investigations and longform features
  • Interpret, edit and visualise data into engaging pieces of graphic journalism
  • Report to the Director of Graphic Journalism, managing daily workflow and helping to establish long-term information design standards
  • Collaborate with{{:}} Editors, Reporters, Data Journalists, Producers, Designers, Developers, Animators, Illustrators, Video producers
  • Research topics surrounding stories to further enhance the quality of graphics
  • Initiate information graphics by pitching ideas to editorial desks
  • Lead the conversation on information graphics, using your expertise to inform colleagues of best practices and appropriate solutions
  • Share technical developments with your colleagues to help progress the team's capabilities

Key Skills

  • Advanced practice of graphic design fundamentals (Typography, colour perception, composition, geometry etc)
  • In-depth knowledge of editorial design and visual storytelling within publishing
  • Comprehensive understanding of graphic production on both print and digital platforms
  • Cartography and geospatial analysis (QGIS, MapShaper)
  • Proficient in technical illustration (Adobe Illustrator. Experience in 3D programs a bonus)
  • Competent in data visualisation tools (Raw, DataWrapper)
  • Fundamental front-end code capabilities (HTML/CSS/JS)
  • Extensive understanding of user focused design and interface design (Figma)
  • Data analysis and editing, to establish trends and points of interest (Excel, Sheets. R or Python is a bonus)
  • Solid grasp of mathematics to enable precision plotting and problem solving
  • Good organisational skills and time management (Email, Trello)

  • An extensive portfolio, showcasing graphic design and infographics
  • Active interest in current affairs and global events
  • Comprehensive understanding of media types and digital formats
  • Previous experience in publishing is a bonus
  • Naturally inquisitive, with excellent observation skills
  • A keen pursuit for technical development and enhancing personal skills
