Job summary

Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust is recruiting an experienced IPC Matron to provide senior leadership for infection prevention and control across Portsmouth and Isle of Wight NHS Trusts. The role focuses on patient safety, quality improvement and group-wide IPC standards, with cross-site responsibilities and 30 hours per week as a fixed term maternity cover.

The post requires a current RN with NMC registration, a degree in IP (or equivalent) and evidence of management training.

Job summary

Working as a partnership, both Isle of Wight NHS Trust and Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust have a shared vision for excellence in care for our patients and communities; with a set of strategic aims underpinning how we will achieve this.

The single corporate service is delivered across both organisations. You may be based at either IWT or PHU and individuals may be required to undertake business travel between sites. For leaders managing staff across multi-site locations, you will need to be visible and provide in person leadership. The arrangements and frequency will be agreed locally.

Job responsibilities

As IPC Matron, you will play a key role in supporting both Trusts to deliver safe, effective, and evidence‑based infection prevention and control. Working closely with the Deputy DIPC, IPC Drs, and wider clinical teams, you will:

• Provide visible, professional leadership across both organisations.
• Responsible for the Operational Management of the IPC Team.
• Lead and influence improvements in clinical practice, patient pathways, and environmental standards.
• Offer expert advice during outbreaks, incidents, and quality reviews.
• Champion best practice, education and engagement with staff, patients, and visitors.
• Contribute to harmonising IPC policies, resources, and communication across the group model.

This role will involve regular cross‑site working, with flexibility to support teams at both PHU and IWT.

Experience

Essential

• Substantial experience of care management, experience of working in a senior role (Band 7) and with evidence of professional development.
• Substantial number of years working within infection prevention and control speciality.
• Evidence of developing policy, guidelines and managing resources.
• Demonstrate extensive relevant clinical experience of working in an acute hospital setting at a senior level.
• Budget management.

Qualifications

Essential

• Current RN with current NMC registration.
• Degree level qualification and/or evidence of working towards Masters in IP.
• Recognised teaching qualification / experience.
• Management Qualification.
