Job Title: Independent Nuclear Assurance (Principal Inspector)

Location: Barrow-in-Furness

What you’ll be doing:

  1. Performing independent inspection, surveillance, and concurrence of nuclear work on facilities, plant, equipment, and nuclear support services, both on-board and on-site, to evaluate nuclear and radiological safety and security performance.
  2. Inspecting and assessing the business’s capability to progress submarine builds and projects within the Site Redevelopment Programme through the ‘Hold Point Control’ process.
  3. Inspecting the business against relevant legislation to assess compliance levels.
  4. Communicating inspection conclusions and findings to stakeholders at all levels, including regulators, board members, and peers.
  5. Assessing emergency arrangements exercises and providing feedback for improvement.
  6. Providing oversight and challenge to safety/security committees to ensure due process and safety standards.
  7. Overseeing Independent Peer Review activities related to safety documentation.
  8. Developing and maintaining an Operational Experience feedback system for the Barrow site, covering nuclear and radiological incidents.
Your skills and experiences:
  1. Knowledge of nuclear site license conditions, security regulations, or equivalent regulated industry experience.
  2. Experience managing programmes in the nuclear or highly regulated industries.
  3. Ability to engage with and influence senior management and regulators.
  4. Background in Marine Engineering, Nuclear Plant Operations, or Nuclear Submarine Build & Commissioning.
  5. Degree or equivalent in STEM.
  6. Experience in audit and regulation.

The Independent Nuclear Assurance Team

This team acts as the internal regulator for the Submarines business, providing an evidence-based independent view of nuclear and radiological safety and security performance, influencing change across all levels of the business.

Roles involve diverse activities, from on-board inspections to executive interviews, with relocation support available for eligible candidates.
