Job summary

Rethink Mental Illness is seeking a qualified Counsellor for a full-time post at HMP Millsike, York. You will deliver 1:1 and group counselling within an integrated prison health team, applying Step 2 IAPT guidance to support wellbeing, rehabilitation, and reduce reoffending prior to release.

As part of the MDT, you will conduct risk assessments, maintain records, and participate in supervision to ensure high-quality care and continuity of services on release.

Qualifications

• Diploma in therapeutic counselling or equivalent with professional accreditation.
• Post-qualification counselling experience within an IAPT or stepped care service delivering evidence-based brief interventions.
• Strong knowledge of assessment, screening, referral pathways, risk assessment, record keeping and outcome measures (e.g., PHQ-9, GAD-7).
• Ability to build effective therapeutic relationships and work inclusively in a culturally sensitive, non-discriminatory manner.
• Clear understanding of IAPT counselling models and their clinical application.

Responsibilities

• Deliver brief 1:1 and group counselling for depression related to life events using Step 2 IAPT guidance.
• Collaborate with the integrated mental health team and care navigation services, with supervision per BACP standards.
• Manage referrals, conduct risk assessments, set goals, and tailor therapy plans.
• Use outcome measures (PHQ-9, GAD-7) to monitor progress and adjust treatment.
• Maintain accurate clinical records and contribute to monthly performance reporting.
