Job summary

MOTT MACDONALD is seeking an ICT Principal Engineer to lead infrastructure design for major Building Services projects across Healthcare, Defence, and civic infrastructure. You will coordinate with MEP disciplines and external partners to deliver concepts through detailed design, enabling high-quality outcomes and strong client relationships.

You will guide design teams, contribute to technical standards, and support learning and development across the group.

Qualifications

  • Essential: Proven experience delivering projects within the built environment.
  • Essential: ICT infrastructure design experience from concept to detailed design.
  • Desirable: Degree-qualified ICT Engineer with Building Services background.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver ICT design for major projects from concept through to detailed design.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and collaborate with architects and civil engineers.
  • Develop and document appropriate ICT solutions to client requirements.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships and ensure high-quality service delivery.
  • Support senior managers with commercial and contractual aspects of projects.
  • Work autonomously within a team on building services projects.
  • Prepare design documents: sketches, drawings, reports, schedules, specifications.
  • Review designs with other disciplines and third parties; inspect and witness testing.
  • Keep up-to-date on standards and emerging technologies; train and mentor junior staff.

Information Communication Technology (ICT) Principal Engineer

Overview of the role

The role is within our Buildings division to work with our multidisciplinary Building Services Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health (MEP) team.

In addition, you will play a key role in winning and delivering major projects across diverse sectors such as Healthcare, Defence and civic infrastructure, Airports, Railway stations, Residential developments, and Data centres.

Key responsibilities and duties
  • Deliver ICT design for major projects from concept through to detailed design.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and collaborate with architects and civil engineers.
  • Working with clients to understand requirements, develop, define and document appropriate solutions.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, ensuring high-quality service delivery.
  • Support to senior managers running the commercial and contractual side of projects.
  • Working autonomously within a team carrying out building services projects.
  • Preparation of design documents including sketches, drawings, reports, schedules and specifications.
  • Woking at various project phases including feasibility, concept & detail design, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, handover and in-use.
  • Reviewing and coordinating designs with other design disciplines both internally and externally
  • Reviewing and commenting on third party designs and checking against briefs and standards.
  • Inspection and witness testing of under construction or as-built systems and reporting findings.
  • Keeping updated on technical standards, technical and product developments, identifying opportunities for training, development, and growth.
  • Support the learning and development of early career professionals in the team.
Candidate Specification

Essential:

  • Proven experience delivering projects within the built environment.
  • Extensive ICT infrastructure design experience across concept and detailed design stages.
  • Capable to lead design and specification of the following systems:
    • CCTV systems
    • Access Control Systems
    • Intruder Detection Systems
    • Integrated Security Management Systems
  • Experience of leading structured design processes such as Home Office ‘Operational Requirements'.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams and coordinate with other disciplines. Delivery of coordinated MEP 3D design models.
  • Leader of ICT elements of one large project or a portfolio of smaller projects.
  • Have a track record in building services ICT engineering design and specification using relevant industry software (NBS Create and REVIT etc).
  • Excellent communication skills, including report writing and presentations.

Desirable:

  • Degree-qualified (or equivalent) ICT Engineer with a strong background in Building Services.
  • Have BICSI Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) or equivalent industry certification.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with IET, CIBSE, or equivalent professional body.
  • Experience in sectors such as MoD/defence, healthcare, infrastructure, aviation, rail, residential or data centres.
  • Experience of designing:
    • Active Ethernet and PON network infrastructure
    • Audio
    • Electronic security systems
    • Fire detection, public address, voice alarm and EVC systems.
  • Awareness of Cyber Security design principles
  • Experience in work-winning and bid support.
  • Familiarity with digital engineering tools and emerging technologies.
  • Up to date knowledge of current building regulations, legislation and standards applicable in building and infrastructure design.
  • Experience of training graduates/Early Career Professionals (ECP).
  • Expecting to drive profitability of projects, monitoring against budget, reacting and anticipating potential problems and communicating in line with client expectations.

  • Willingness to travel within the UK and occasionally internationally as required
  • Commitment to high standards of corporate governance and project delivery
Security clearance

We recognise that skills gained in the Armed Forces are highly transferable to this role. Experience gained through military service in ICT, communications systems, signals & critical infrastructure will be considered alongside experience gained in civilian industries. While security clearance is not expected for application, candidates will be requested to undertake such for UK defence projects.
