Job summary

Mott MacDonald is seeking a Principal – Building Services Electrical Engineer to lead a multidisciplinary MEP team. The role is ideally based in London, with collaboration across Croydon, Brighton and Bristol and opportunities on national/international projects.

The candidate will deliver electrical design across major projects, lead work-winning efforts, and drive sustainability and best practices in engineering design.

Qualifications

  • Degree-qualified Electrical Engineer with strong Building Services background.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with IET/CIBSE or equivalent.
  • Proven experience delivering built environment projects with sustainable solutions.
  • Extensive MEP design experience from concept to detail stages.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver electrical design for major projects from concept to detailed design.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams and collaborate with architects and civil engineers.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships and ensure high-quality service delivery.
  • Contribute to business development, including work-winning and bid leadership.
  • Champion innovation, sustainability, and best practice in engineering design.
  • Support senior managers in running commercial and contractual aspects of projects.
  • Work autonomously within the team on building services projects.

Overview of the role

We are seeking a Principal – Building Services Electrical Engineer to lead, grow and inspire our multidisciplinary MEP team. The role is ideally based in our London office, with collaboration across regional teams in Croydon, Brighton and Bristol, and opportunities to contribute to national and international projects.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver electrical design for major projects from concept through to detailed design.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams and collaborate with architects and civil engineers.

  • Support senior managers in running the commercial and contractual side of projects.
  • Work autonomously within the team carrying out building services projects.
Essential qualifications
  • Degree‑qualified Electrical Engineer with a strong background in Building Services.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with IET, CIBSE, or equivalent professional body.
  • Proven experience delivering projects within the built environment with sustainable solutions.
  • Extensive MEP design experience across concept and detailed design stages.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead electrical teams and coordinate with other disciplines.
  • Delivery of coordinated MEP 3D design models.
  • Leader of electrical elements of one large project or a portfolio of smaller projects.
  • Track record in building services electrical engineering design and specification using relevant industry software (NBS Create, Amtech, Lighting and REVIT, etc).
  • Excellent communication skills, including report writing and presentations.
  • Up‑to‑date knowledge of current building regulations, legislation and standards applicable in building and infrastructure design.
Desirable qualifications
  • Experience in sectors such as healthcare, infrastructure, aviation, rail, residential or data centres.
  • Knowledge of the London market and broader UK.
  • Experience in work‑winning and bid support.
  • Familiarity with digital engineering tools and emerging technologies.
  • Up‑to‑date knowledge of current building regulations, legislation and standards applicable in building and infrastructure design.
  • Experience of training graduates/Early Career Professionals (ECP).
  • Experience driving profitability of projects, monitoring against budget, reacting and anticipating potential problems and communicating in line with client expectations.
Additional expectations
  • Willingness to travel within the UK and occasionally internationally as required.
  • Commitment to high standards of corporate governance and project delivery.
