Job summary

Mott MacDonald is seeking an ICT Principal Engineer to design Security Systems and ICT Infrastructure within the Digital Infrastructure team of the Buildings division. The role is ideally based in our South‑East UK offices (London, Croydon, Cambridge, Brighton, Birmingham and Bristol), with opportunities to contribute to national and international projects.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience delivering projects within the built environment.
  • Extensive ICT infrastructure design experience across concept and detailed design stages.
  • Capable to lead design and specification of CCTV systems, access control systems, intruder detection systems and integrated security management systems.
  • Experience of leading structured design processes such as Home Office ‘Operational Requirements'.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams and coordinate with other disciplines; delivery of coordinated MEP 3D design models.
  • Leader of ICT elements of one large project or a portfolio of smaller projects.
  • Track record in building services ICT engineering design and specification using industry software such as NBS Create and Revit.
  • Excellent communication skills, including report writing and presentations.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver ICT design for major projects from concept through to detailed design.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and collaborate with architects and civil engineers.
  • Work with clients to understand requirements, develop, define and document appropriate solutions.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, ensuring high‑quality service delivery.
  • Support senior managers running the commercial and contractual side of projects.
  • Work autonomously within a team carrying out building services projects.
  • Prepare design documents including sketches, drawings, reports, schedules and specifications.
  • Work at various project phases including feasibility, concept & detail design, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, handover and in‑use.
  • Review and coordinate designs with other design disciplines both internally and externally.
  • Review and comment on third‑party designs and check against briefs and standards.
  • Inspect and witness testing of under construction or as‑built systems and report findings.
  • Keep updated on technical standards, technical and product developments, identifying opportunities for training, development and growth.
  • Support the learning and development of early career professionals in the team.

Overview of the role

We are seeking an Information Communication Technology (ICT) Principal Engineer to design Security Systems and ICT Infrastructure with our Digital Infrastructure team. The role is within our Buildings division to work with our multidisciplinary Building Services Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health (MEP) team.

This role is ideally based in one of our South‑East UK offices (London, Croydon, Cambridge, Brighton, Birmingham and Bristol), with opportunities to contribute to national and international projects.

You will play a key role in both winning and delivering major projects across diverse sectors, including:

Candidate specification
Essential
  • Proven experience delivering projects within the built environment.
  • Extensive ICT infrastructure design experience across concept and detailed design stages.
  • Capable to lead design and specification of CCTV systems, access control systems, intruder detection systems and integrated security management systems.
  • Experience of leading structured design processes such as Home Office ‘Operational Requirements'.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams and coordinate with other disciplines; delivery of coordinated MEP 3D design models.

Desirable
  • Degree‑qualified ICT Engineer with a strong background in Building Services.
  • BICSI Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) or equivalent certification.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with IET, CIBSE or equivalent professional body.
  • Experience in MoD/defence, healthcare, infrastructure, aviation, rail, residential or data centre sectors.
  • Experience designing Active Ethernet and PON network infrastructure, Audio, Electronic security systems, Fire detection, public address, voice alarm and EVC systems.
  • Awareness of Cyber Security design principles.
  • Experience in work‑winning and bid support.
  • Familiarity with digital engineering tools and emerging technologies.
  • Up‑to‑date knowledge of building regulations, legislation and standards applicable in building and infrastructure design.
  • Experience training graduates / Early Career Professionals.
  • Ability to drive profitability of projects, monitor against budget, react and anticipate potential problems and communicate in line with client expectations.

  • Willingness to travel within the UK and occasionally internationally as required.

Security clearance
