Job summary

Hargreaves Lansdown is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a back- and middle-office transformation. You will stay hands-on with architecture, code and delivery while building a strong engineering team to modernise legacy workflows at scale.

You will shape capabilities across services, APIs, events and data flows, coordinating with Product, Architecture, Operations and Data Platform. Flexible/hybrid working and a strong engineering culture are offered.

Qualifications

• Proven experience leading a backend or integration engineering team while remaining technically hands-on.
• Strong software engineering experience with TypeScript or a comparable modern backend language.
• Deep practical knowledge of REST APIs, messaging, event-driven architecture, distributed systems and integration design patterns.
• Experience designing and operating cloud-native services on AWS, including Lambda, API Gateway, EventBridge, SQS/SNS, IAM, CloudWatch and VPC networking.
• Experience delivering infrastructure as code with Terraform and automated delivery through CI/CD pipelines.
• Strong understanding of testing strategies, observability, resilience, security and production support.
• Experience modernising legacy systems or delivering complex transformation programmes with multiple dependencies.
• Evidence of coaching engineers, improving team effectiveness and influencing technical decisions beyond a single squad.

Responsibilities

• Hands-on engineering and technical direction across backend services, APIs and integration components.
• Own the technical direction of the squad, delivering a scalable backend estate for transformation.
• Design and deliver synchronous, asynchronous and event-driven integrations using cloud-native patterns.
• Set API-first standards, versioning, backward compatibility, automated testing and observability.
• Review code and designs, remove blockers and ensure production-ready solutions.
• Lead incremental modernisation and reuse to reduce legacy complexity.
• Define and deliver the multi-year engineering roadmap for backend capabilities.
• Build reusable domain services, APIs, events and data flows across journeys.
• Translate operating models into service boundaries and dependable integration capabilities.
• Lead migration from legacy services with safe approaches and rollback options.
• Ensure security, observability, resilience and supportability from the outset.
• Define delivery environment with Product and Delivery for effective prioritisation.
