Job summary

SmartTek Global in Glasgow seeks a SCADA & Communications Engineer to design and implement robust SCADA architectures for HV substations and BESS projects. You will specify RTUs/PLCs/HMIs, configure network devices, and define communication protocols, ensuring secure, reliable data flows to control rooms.

The role covers design through FAT/SAT and handover, with strong emphasis on cybersecurity, OT/IT integration, and collaboration with protection, design, and commissioning teams.

Qualifications

• Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical, Electronic, Control, or Communications Engineering.
• Proven experience designing or delivering SCADA and communications systems for HV substations, grid connections, or BESS projects.
• Strong understanding of industrial communication protocols and control architectures.
• Hands-on experience with RTUs, PLCs, HMIs, and network devices from major OEMs (Siemens, Schneider, GE, SEL, Emerson).
• Familiarity with network configuration (VLANs, routing, VPNs, firewalls).
• Knowledge of IEC 61850, IEC 60870, and DNP3 standards.
• EPC or design/build delivery experience.
• Experience integrating BESS Controllers, Inverters, Transformers, and Auxiliaries within SCADA systems.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop SCADA and communication architectures for HV substations and BESS installations (11-400 kV).
• Specify, configure, and integrate RTUs, PLCs, HMIs, and network equipment (routers, switches, firewalls).
• Develop SCADA I/O schedules, communication diagrams, and interface control documents (ICDs).
• Define and implement communication protocols (IEC 61850, IEC 60870-101/104, DNP3, Modbus TCP/RTU).
• Ensure robust data, control, and telemetry links between site assets and control centres.
• Support FAT/SAT, testing, and commissioning of SCADA and communication systems.
• Liaise with DNOs/TOs/NGESO for telemetry and interface acceptance.
• Ensure designs meet cybersecurity and IT/OT network security requirements.
• Collaborate with Protection & Controls, Electrical Design, and Commissioning teams.
• Manage technical documentation via Procore or equivalent.
• Apply CDM Regulations and HSE requirements.
