Job summary

National Grid plc is seeking a mechanically biased engineer to maintain and repair critical substation equipment across the North London area. You will undertake stripping, inspection and rebuilding of mechanical components, diagnose faults, and perform routine inspections on transformers, air systems and cable equipment.

This role combines field work with site learning at our Nottinghamshire training centre and may include overnight stays.

Qualifications

• Recognised apprenticeship in Mechanical engineering or NVQ/Level 3 Mechanical engineering with fitting experience.
• Strong mechanical maintenance, overhaul or installation experience.
• Experience stripping, rebuilding and repairing plant and equipment.
• Confident with hand/power tools and torque tools.
• Willingness to work at height and follow safe practices.

Responsibilities

• Maintain, repair and overhaul equipment in HV substations.
• Strip, inspect and rebuild mechanical components.
• Diagnose faults and carry out repairs.
• Replace worn components and install refurbished equipment.
• Support planned maintenance and emergency breakdown response.
• Perform routine inspections and condition monitoring.
