Job summary

National Grid is seeking a hands-on mechanical engineer to maintain and overhaul equipment across its electricity transmission substations, primarily in Lancashire. The role is outdoors, requires working at height, and occasional stays away from home with travel to sites.

You will strip, inspect, repair and replace components, install equipment, and support planned maintenance and emergency responses. Training is provided at the Eakring Training Centre, Nottinghamshire.

Qualifications

• Recognised mechanical engineering apprenticeship or NVQ/Level 3 with fitting experience.
• Strong mechanical maintenance, overhaul or installation experience.
• Experience stripping, rebuilding and repairing plant and equipment.
• Confidence using hand tools, power tools, precision measuring equipment and torque tools.

Responsibilities

• Maintain, repair and overhaul equipment in substations.
• Strip, inspect and rebuild mechanical components; diagnose faults and carry out repairs.
• Replace worn components and install new or refurbished equipment.
• Support planned maintenance and emergency breakdown response; conduct inspections.
