ST MARY'S CALNE is seeking an HR Manager to lead a small HR team consisting of an HR Generalist, HR Administrator and Payroll Officer, delivering the HR function across two schools and an on-site Sports Club. The role covers recruitment, employee relations, performance management, training, development and compliance with employment law and school policies.

The successful candidate will support managers, enhance HR processes and contribute to a positive staff experience throughout the employee

Qualifications

  • CIPD Level 5 qualification (or Level 3 with 5+ years HR experience).
  • Proven experience leading and managing HR functions.
  • Strong knowledge of employment law and its practical application.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong administrative and organisational skills with high attention to detail.

Job description

Job Summary The HR Manager is responsible for a small team consisting of an HR Generalist, HR Administrator and Payroll Officer who together deliver the HR function across two schools and an on-site Sports Club. This on-site role oversees the day-to-day operation of HR practices, ensuring excellence across recruitment, employee relations, performance management, training and development, and compliance with employment legislation and school/Sports Club policies. The postholder plays a key role in supporting managers, enhancing HR processes, and contributing to a positive staff experience throughout the employee lifecycle. This is an on-site role. Key Responsibilities Leadership & Compliance

Leadership & Compliance
  • Ensure all HR activity complies with statutory requirements, employment law, safeguarding expectations, and internal policies.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of employment legislation and best practice, advising the leadership team as needed.
  • Lead, support, and develop the HR team, ensuring high-quality service delivery across all HR operations.
HR Operations & Employee Lifecycle
  • Oversee and continuously improve HR processes across recruitment, onboarding, induction, performance, employee relations, welfare and exit procedures.
  • Maintain accurate, compliant, and confidential staff records in line with data protection regulations.
  • Support the COO in reviewing and updating HR policies, procedures, and internal practices.
  • Provide comprehensive HR support and guidance to all line managers.
Recruitment & Onboarding
  • Oversee and support the HR Generalist with the full recruitment cycle, ensuring efficient, inclusive, and effective processes that attract high-quality candidates.
  • Oversee and support the HR Generalist with the maintenance of the School Central Register.
  • Review vacancy details, job descriptions, and recruitment materials to ensure consistency and compliance.
  • Review contracts, appointment letters, and accommodation licenses as needed.
  • Support HR Administrator with employment checks, staff movements, and probation processes.
  • Ensure all new staff receive a comprehensive and positive induction experience.
HR Systems & Process Improvement
  • Support the ongoing transition from manual processes to the HRIS system.
  • Support the implementation of the HRIS recruitment module and champion digital transformation across HR operations.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline workflows and enhance service delivery.
Payroll, Pension and Benefits
  • Provide support to the Payroll Officer as required, ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing.
  • Oversee the administration of staff pensions, ensuring compliance with auto-enrolment legislation and internal procedures.
  • Support the Payroll Officer with pension-related queries, liaising with external pension providers where necessary.
  • Ensure new starters receive clear information about pension scheme options and that leavers are provided with accurate pension-related documentation.
Staff Experience & Feedback
  • Conduct exit interviews and collate feedback to support organisational learning and improvement.
  • Contribute to wider HR projects and undertake ad hoc tasks as directed by the COO.

Skills, Qualifications and Attributes
