Qualifications

The Human Factors Engineer will act as the Subject Matter Expert in Human Factors and ergonomic matters to all of Marshall Deployable Infrastructure and Vehicle & Missions Business Lines, supporting those engineering functions including delivery and products. The role will promote best practice within the wider business and support engineering governance in Human Factors and Ergonomics.

The responsibilities in this role include:

  • Apply Human Factors performance principles, methodologies, and techniques to the design, use, and operation of human-machine systems and products
  • Identify areas where human factors input may assist in reducing poor ergonomics within product design and recommend improvements or alternative solutions in line with Def Stan 00-251, Mil Std 1472H, and other customer specifications.
  • Identify and analyze technical problems or risks by performing theoretical or practical human factors investigations to mitigate or resolve them.
  • Plan and manage assigned work and report status to Human Factors Leads/Project Management/Senior System Engineers, or other Team Leads as required.
  • Support the preparation of technical reports, presentations, bid support, and face-to-face client liaison when required.
  • Promote the application of HF capabilities to customers and client presentations as appropriate.
  • Support other Integrated Logistic Support activities such as Ease of Maintenance and the development of technical publications.
  • Provide support to system engineering tasks, including requirements analysis, decomposition, and creation of verification and validation plans.
  • Support Safety & Environmental activities, including the identification of use-related hazards and development of early-stage user studies.
  • Collaborate with product teams to ensure Human Factors input is integrated at all stages of the CADMID cycle.
  • Develop or implement human performance research, investigation, or analysis protocols.
  • Assess the user-interface or usability characteristics of MLS products.
  • Conduct user assessments and collect data through direct observation of tasks.
  • Assist in writing and reviewing HFI documentation such as proposals and test plans.
  • Provide human factors expertise on topics like advanced user-interface technology development or human roles in automated or autonomous systems.
  • Estimate time or resource requirements for ergonomic or human factors research or development projects.
  • Recommend workplace changes to improve health and safety using knowledge of potentially harmful factors.
  • Prepare reports or presentations summarizing human factors activities, including testing, investigations, and validation.
  • Integrate human factors requirements into operational products.
  • Assist in establishing system operating or training requirements to ensure optimized HMI.
  • Perform functional, task, or anthropometric analysis using HF tools such as checklists, surveys, and observational analysis.
  • Analyze systems for potential development, production, interoperability, compatibility, or usefulness within MLS products.
  • Design or evaluate human work systems using ergonomic principles to optimize usability, cost, quality, safety, or performance.

Apply if you have most of the following:

    • Human Factors and Ergonomics practices
    • Ministry of Defence Standards (Def Stan 00-251, JSP 912)

  • Strong interpersonal skills and enthusiastic communication at all levels
  • Member of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF)

Experience:

  • Developing Human Factors documentation per Def Stan 00-251
  • Providing human Factors guidance to project/product teams
  • Managing Human Factors risks in products
  • Supporting safety and environmental assurance activities
