Magpie Recruitment seeks an experienced HSE Team Manager to lead the UK site safety function for an established renewable energy business. You will manage HSE and CDM professionals across major projects, combining hands-on leadership with site assurance, incident oversight and regulatory compliance.

The role is based at the Surrey office with regular travel to project sites nationwide, overseeing policy updates, training and ISO improvements while driving safety performance across the UK

Qualifications

  • Qualified in occupational health and safety or a related discipline.
  • Several years’ HSE experience in site-based projects such as construction, infrastructure or renewables.
  • Strong knowledge of UK H&S legislation and CDM requirements.
  • Experience leading and developing an HSE team.
  • Proven track record conducting inspections, investigations and reporting.

  • Set expectations and ensure compliant performance and reporting.
  • Conduct site inspections, audits and unannounced compliance checks.
  • Oversee incident investigations, actions and lessons learned.
  • Provide HSE guidance during tenders and regulatory submissions.
  • Develop and deliver training for HSE staff and site teams.
  • Champion ISO compliance and improvements across the portfolio.
  • Collaborate with project delivery and sustainability teams.

Job description

The Opportunity

An established international renewable energy business is looking for an experienced HSE Team Manager to lead its UK-based site safety function.

You will manage and develop a team of HSE and CDM professionals working across major renewable energy construction projects. This is a hands-on leadership role combining team management, site assurance, incident oversight, regulatory compliance and the continued improvement of UK HSE systems.

The position is based at the company’s Surrey office and requires regular travel to project sites nationwide.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead, support and develop HSE and CDM Managers operating across UK project sites
  • Set clear expectations and ensure consistent standards of performance, compliance and reporting
  • Complete regular site inspections, audits and unannounced compliance checks
  • Oversee incident investigations, corrective actions and lessons-learned processes
  • Conduct performance reviews and support the professional development of HSE team members
  • Provide HSE guidance during tenders, including PQQ, RFQ and ITT submissions
  • Assess client and employer requirements to identify project-specific HSE obligations
  • Review and update UK health, safety and environmental policies and procedures
  • Monitor changes to UK legislation and incorporate them into operational practices
  • Support the business in achieving and maintaining relevant ISO accreditations
  • Develop and deliver training for HSE/CDM Managers, Site Managers and Site Supervisors
  • Partner with project delivery and sustainability teams to improve standards across the UK portfolio
About You

You will be an experienced HSE professional with a strong understanding of safety management within construction, infrastructure or renewable energy projects.

You should have:
  • A degree or recognised qualification in occupational health and safety or a related discipline
  • Several years’ experience in an HSE position within a site-based project environment
  • Strong knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and CDM requirements
  • Previous experience leading, coordinating or developing an HSE team
  • Practical experience conducting inspections, managing incidents and producing HSE reports
  • The confidence to challenge performance and hold teams accountable
  • Experience developing and implementing HSE policies and procedures
  • Strong communication, organisation and stakeholder-management skills
  • A proactive and solutions-focused approach
  • Full professional fluency in English
  • The flexibility to travel regularly throughout the UK

Experience within utility-scale solar, renewable energy or large construction projects would be highly advantageous. Knowledge of ISO certification and management systems would also be beneficial.
