Job description

At Gear4music, we're not just passionate about music – we're passionate about people too. Our HR team is at the heart of making Gear4music a brilliant place to work, and right now, we're looking for a highly organised, approachable, and professional HR Generalist to join the team.

We’re a small and growing HR team, which means this role offers the opportunity to get involved in a broad range of HR activity. This role would fit someone who enjoys a varied job role, with a mixture of administration and casework responsibilities. You’ll also contribute to key initiatives and projects at different times of the year, including the implementation of a new HR system in 2026, making a real impact across the business.

Key Responsibilities
  • Responsible for all first-level queries from across the business, including daily management of the HR Inbox, providing timely and professional responses.
  • Deliver accurate and efficient HR administration, including processing starters, leavers, and employee changes. Issuing contracts, letters, and documentation, and ensuring all people data and records remain accurate and up to date.
  • Ensuring all new starters have a fantastic welcome and onboarding experience to the Company, working with other departments such as Facilities and I.T. to ensure a smooth setup.
  • Support with a wide range of Employee Relations casework including informal welfare matters, sickness absence management, probation reviews, maternity & paternity cases. Plus, more complex disciplinaries, grievances and investigations when they arise. At Gear4music we aim to deal with matters promptly and proactively, preferring informal options wherever possible whilst remaining legally compliant.
  • Contribute to wider HR initiatives such as Annual Performance Reviews, management training programmes, organising and tracking of e-learning.
  • Support the implementation and rollout of a new HR system in 2026, including data handling and process improvements.
  • Provide support to the HR & Recruitment Manager, being flexible to adapt to wherever support may be required across the HR & Recruitment function.
  • Provide support across both our Holgate HQ and Clifton Moor site, particularly during seasonal peak periods.
  • Willing to provide remote HR support to international hubs as and when required – specifically Ireland. We have some excellent HR tools to support development in this field.
About You

We’re looking for someone who brings both capability and a great team mindset:

  • Highly organised, with excellent administrative skills and attention to detail. Ensuring accuracy while working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Professional, friendly, and approachable, with the ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion and empathy.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (including Excel) and experienced in using HR systems.
  • An excellent communicator with a collaborative approach, confident working with people at all levels.
  • Comfortable supporting system implementation projects, with strong attention to detail and data accuracy.
  • The ability to manage multiple and changing priorities to meet business demands.
  • A self-starter with a can-do attitude and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Able to demonstrate sound judgement and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • A team player who leads by example, consistently reflecting our values through actions and attitude.
  • Flexible and adaptable, with an interest in getting involved across a wide variety of HR activities rather than working within a narrow specialism.
  • Ideally CIPD Level 5 qualified (or equivalent work experience), or keen to continue developing your HR career.
Additional Information
  • This role is based at Holgate HQ, York, with flexibility required to support our Clifton Moor site as needed.
  • Due to the seasonal nature of the business, holiday may be restricted during peak periods (October–December and March/April).
  • While the role is being advertised as full-time, we are open to applicants who are able to work a minimum of 30 hours across Monday-Friday. Our Recruitment Team would be happy to discuss this with candidates on an individual basis.
Why Join Gear4music?
  • Opportunity to be part of a growing, fast-paced business
  • A supportive and collaborative HR team
  • Exposure to a wide range of HR activities and projects
  • The chance to play a key role in shaping and improving HR systems and processes
What we’ll give you

Alongside the benefit of working with a fantastic bunch of talented people, we are committed to providing a well-rounded benefits package that includes development opportunities and support for your wellbeing:

  • Generous discount scheme across our full range of music and home entertainment products
  • Employee Assistance Programme, offering 24/7 caring & compassionate support across a wide range of areas
  • Access to 30 qualified Mental Health First Aiders across the business, demonstrating our commitment to prioritising mental health & wellbeing support as a ‘Mindful Employer’
  • Free car parking with access to electric charging points

Plus the following: employee referral scheme, employer pension scheme, corporate eyecare vouchers, cycle to work scheme, company sick pay scheme, enhanced maternity, paternity & adoption pay and annual flu vaccinations.

We have an open, collaborative, and friendly culture, and offer a supportive learning environment for people to grow and develop a career with us.

We are an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates, regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership status, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation, in line with the Equality Act 2010.

If you require any reasonable adjustments as part of the recruitment process, please let us know. A member of our friendly recruitment team will contact you to discuss your needs in more detail and ensure appropriate arrangements are made.
