Job summary

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (Chorley Hospital) is seeking a 12-month porter to support patient transfers, sample collection, linen and waste transport, and general portering tasks. You will work with clinical and non-clinical staff, ensuring safety and efficient patient care.

The role requires a full UK driving licence, good communication skills, and the ability to manage workload with initiative in a busy hospital environment.

Qualifications

• Basic level of education in literacy and numeracy.
• Previous experience of working with the public.
• Full UK driving licence.

Responsibilities

• Support patients being moved between wards and departments
• Carry out general portering duties, including sample collection, post and linen transport
• Remove domestic and clinical waste
• Carry out occasional ad hoc driving requests
• Assist with security issues as required
• Communicate by phone, radio and written procedures with the portering supervisor and colleagues
• Communicate with clinical and non-clinical staff, patients and visitors about portering needs
• Identify and act on risks or hazards in the working environment
• Assist Emergency Department colleagues during contamination incidents, including erecting the decontamination tent
• Plan own workload and resolve problems on own initiative
• Maintain a consistently high standard of professionalism and flexibility
• Maintain and develop own competence for the portering role
