About Haringey

Haringey is a fantastic place to live and work – the world in one borough. A place brimming with creativity, personality, radicalism, and community. It is a place where we stand up for each other. A place that is proudly distinctive. We’ll be celebrating all this and more as the "rebel borough" when we are the 2027 London Borough of Culture.

Our history champions change-makers and everyday rebels; revelling in our differences, battling discrimination, championing equality, and doing things our own way. Haringey’s people are a huge asset, with knowledge, expertise, and passion. Our staff members embody our organisational values: Caring, Creative, Courageous, Collaborative and Community-focused. These values keep us looking forward, ambitious for the future, and continuously striving to do our very best for all of our residents.

About Role

We are looking for a proactive and customer-focused HMO Compliance Officer to join our Private Sector Housing Team. In this varied and rewarding role, you will work with landlords to improve housing standards across the borough through advice, guidance, compliance activity and where necessary, enforcement action. You will carry out property inspections, identify housing defects, monitor remedial works and ensure compliance with relevant housing standards and licensing requirements. Working independently and as part of a wider regulatory service, you will contribute to improving residents’ homes and help deliver positive outcomes for local communities

About The Team

The Private Sector Housing Team sits within the Environment & Neighbourhoods Directorate and plays a key role in raising standards across the private rented sector. The team works closely with residents, landlords, businesses and external partners to ensure properties are safe, compliant and well managed. This is a collaborative and supportive environment where knowledge sharing, professional development and continuous service improvement are encouraged. You will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced housing professionals while contributing to important projects and service objectives that make a real difference to people’s homes and neighbourhoods

About You

You will have experience and knowledge of private sector housing, building surveying, building maintenance, the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS), the Housing Act 2004 and other relevant housing legislation. You will be confident in carrying out inspections, identifying building defects and recommending practical solutions to resolve them. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, together with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders. You will be comfortable managing your own workload, working independently with minimal supervision, making sound decisions under pressure and meeting deadlines. Experience of working within a private sector housing environment, knowledge of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs), fire safety requirements and the use of housing management and IT systems will be highly valued. A commitment to partnership working, continuous professional development and delivering excellent customer service is essential. This post is subject to a DBS check.
