Job summary

Supply Desk is seeking a dedicated Teaching Assistant / HLTA to provide specialist behaviour and emotional support in a Southampton primary school. You will deliver 1:1 support, help the pupil access the curriculum, and implement behaviour strategies while working closely with teachers and SENDCo.

The role offers part-time, fixed-term work with potential for extension and a focus on developing SEMH expertise.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with children or young people.
  • Experience supporting pupils with SEMH, behavioural or additional needs.
  • TA or HLTA experience within a primary setting.
  • HLTA qualification or relevant experience is advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of positive behaviour and emotional regulation strategies.
  • Patient, calm and nurturing approach.
  • Ability to remain consistent and resilient when faced with challenging situations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build positive and trusting relationships with pupils.
  • Confident working as part of a wider school and professional team.
  • Flexible and proactive approach.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting pupil wellbeing.

Responsibilities

  • Provide dedicated 1:1 support to a pupil with behavioural and emotional needs.
  • Build a positive, trusting and professional relationship with the pupil.
  • Support emotional regulation and promote positive behaviour strategies.
  • Encourage independence, resilience and self-confidence.
  • Help the pupil access the curriculum and participate fully in school activities.
  • Deliver targeted academic, social and emotional interventions.
  • Adapt activities and resources to meet individual learning needs.
  • Support teaching and learning within the classroom.
  • Lead small-group activities and intervention programmes.
  • Implement individual behaviour support plans and risk assessments.
  • Use restorative and positive approaches to support behaviour and learning.
  • Maintain a calm, nurturing and consistent environment.
  • Monitor and record progress against individual targets and support plans.
  • Deliver pre-planned lessons where appropriate and within HLTA responsibilities.
  • Work closely with teachers, the SENDCo and senior leaders.
  • Liaise with parents, carers and external professionals where required.
