Bridgend County Borough Council seeks a seasoned Highways Network Manager within the Communities Directorate in Bridgend to lead a multi‑functional team and oversee highway maintenance, flood and coastal management, and streetworks coordination.
You will manage a revenue budget of about £2 million, direct 7 staff including engineers and inspectors, and ensure safe, reliable networks for residents and visitors.
An exciting opportunity has arisen within Communities Directorate within Bridgend County Borough Council who are seeking an individual with significant experience of running a multi-functional department, with a wide portfolio of roles and duties. Ultimately the successful, candidate will be at the forefront of the Authorities Highway Maintenance and Coastal and Flood Management duties.
The department continues to attract funding to tackle the backlog of maintenance works to the major assets controlled by the team, such as carriageways, footways and structures with a capital budget alone of approximately £4 million. The successful candidate will be continuing on the good work the team have undertaken to date, which will lead to future similar levels of investment as the Council look improve the community access needs.
The role will require a candidate who can oversee, direct and manage service areas including maintenance of highway structures, carriageways, footways, coal tips and the ability to manage a team of 7 members (including Engineers, inspectors, technicians). They will oversee a highway revenue budget of approximately £2 Million per annum.
The successful candidate will also manage the department tasked with flood and coastal management throughout the County Borough, from maintenance of the coastal defences in the south of the Borough, to the maintenance of our culverts and drainage systems in the valley areas. This is achieved through a team of 3 drainage engineers and a drainage inspector.
You will also direct the department responsible for monitoring and controlling the works by others on the Highway network, through the streetworks team, who include 5 staff to inspect and coordinate works on the network.
This varied and fulfilling role will allow you to provide direction and make a real improvement to the residents within our communities by ensuring our highway network is maintained to a high level, we mitigate future flooding issues, and reduce the congestion on the highway network.
The applicant must have knowledge, experience and be able to demonstrate the ability to undertake this challenging and varied role within the Highway Maintenance/Flood & Coastal/Streetworks area. You must be able to work well as an individual and as part of a team and communicate effectively with colleagues, external companies, local members, Senedd Members, MP’s and members of the public.
A Health Surveillance assessment through our Occupational Health Service is a requirement for this post.
Winter Maintenance, Standby Duties and Emergency Response are a requirement of this post.
