Job summary

Suffolk County Council is seeking a Highway Licensing Inspector to safeguard the county’s highway network, blending office work with on-site inspections across Suffolk.

You’ll assess applications, provide expert advice, and support enforcement to ensure safety and compliance, with hybrid working options available. The role involves 37 hours weekly, a permanent contract, and a salary of £34,434 per year with pay progression.

Qualifications

• A high level of autonomy during day-to-day countywide work and site visits.
• Knowledge and experience applying the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.
• Knowledge and experience applying the Highway Act in a licensing or enforcement context.
• Experience giving comprehensive advice to customer enquiries and works.
• Ability to work safely on live carriageways.

Responsibilities

• Manage and protect Suffolk's highway network through inspections and assessments.
• Work across Suffolk on applications affecting the highway (skips, scaffolding, pavement cafés, vehicle access, etc.).
• Provide expert advice to residents, businesses and councils and balance safety with service needs.
• Support enforcement activities and educate customers to ensure highway compliance.
