Job summary

Amey is seeking an experienced Highways Engineer to join the Design and Development team across the Midlands, with offices in Nottingham, Birmingham and Stafford. The role supports the Midlands Highway Alliance and SDF frameworks, delivering highway infrastructure and maintenance projects, from design through to delivery.

You will lead junior engineers on various highway schemes, collaborate with clients, suppliers and local authorities, and contribute to bids while benefiting from a flexible,

Responsibilities

  • Work in a team producing technically sound engineering solutions that comply with standards and client requirements, supervising junior staff.
  • Prepare and check designs, calculations, drawings and documentation for scheme deliverables, overseeing junior staff.
  • Liaise with client and supplier representatives at peer level and attend progress meetings.
  • Lead a small, locally based single-discipline technical team and deliver workload.
  • Contribute to bids and business development.
  • Work on site as required, including out-of-hours working.

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Civil Engineer to join our Consulting Highways Team. With office space in Nottingham, Birmingham and Stafford our we invite applications from across Midlands

Key Midlands Frameworks

  • Midlands Highway Alliance (MHA): This framework enables us to collaborate directly with 21 local authorities, delivering essential highway infrastructure and maintenance projects. The MHA contract encompasses a variety of tasks, from routine maintenance and upgrades to innovative highway design solutions. The scale and diversity of this framework provide ample opportunities to work on a wide range of civil engineering challenges and showcase your expertise in highway design, management, and construction.
  • Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF): The SDF framework is managed in collaboration with Highways England, the government agency responsible for overseeing the maintenance and improvement of the country’s motorways and major A roads. The SDF covers a comprehensive range of civil engineering projects, including highways, bridges, and more. As part of this framework, you will have the opportunity to work on both major and minor schemes, contributing to the successful delivery of projects that enhance the built environment. The SDF is particularly focused on delivering sustainable, efficient solutions, and you will have the chance to apply cutting‑edge technologies and methods to ensure that projects meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and sustainability.
  • Staffordshire Infrastructure Plus: Our partnership with Staffordshire County Council under this long-term contract has delivered over £100m worth of major transport infrastructure projects. The partnership has successfully supported the creation of over 12,000 new jobs and 10,000 new homes, making it a cornerstone of regional growth and development. What you will be doing:

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Highways Engineer to support our Design and Development team. As a Civil Engineer, you will support the Senior Engineer and lead junior Engineers in the design and delivery of multiple highway projects ranging from junction improvements to new roads and bridges. Responsibilities include:

  • To work in a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working unsupervised and supervising more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks.
  • The preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme. Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions.
  • Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, responding to queries etc.
  • Managing a small, locally based single discipline technical team and taking responsibility for delivery of workload.
  • Contributing to the preparation of bids and the general work winning function.
  • Working on site, either on a visiting basis or in a full time but temporary role and including out of hours working.
We want to hear from you if you have:
  • Relevant experience in highway engineering, particularly local roads and S278 layouts
  • The ability to work in a commercial and customer focused way which achieves programme objectives, meets performance targets and generates income
  • Be confident to work under minimum supervision and competent to check the work of others and supervise less experienced or junior staff
  • A good understanding of Manual for Streets, DMRB, other national standards, best practice guidance, local standards etc.
  • A good understanding of the CDM regulations and their relevance to highway design
  • The ability to support the preparation of briefs for fee quotes for delivery of services when required
  • Can deliver on time, within budget and to the quality required
  • Keep up to date with industry best practice and where appropriate apply best practice within the team
