Job summary

WSP is seeking a Highway Engineer to join our Local Government teams, delivering highways, bridges and infrastructure for local authorities from Exeter or Taunton. You will work with a collaborative team to design across project stages, ensuring delivery to programme, budget, and standards.

You will contribute to cost estimation, prepare design documentation, and support site activities as needed. The role offers hybrid working with some on-site requirements.

Qualifications

  • A passion for design and a drive to develop innovative, practical engineering solutions.
  • A degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent experience within a highway design environment.
  • Experience in multi-disciplinary highway design across different project stages.
  • Technical knowledge in road geometry, junction design, active travel schemes, drainage systems, road restraint systems, and traffic signs/road markings.
  • Proficiency in design software such as Autodesk Civil 3D, Bentley OpenRoads Designer, InfoDrainage, and/or PDS.

Responsibilities

  • Developing highway designs on multi-disciplinary projects through the various stages of the project lifecycle.
  • Ensuring projects are delivered to programme, budget, technical standards, and legal requirements.
  • Assisting Project Managers with planning, programming, technical input, pricing of project briefs, proposals, and cost estimation.
  • Preparing design documentation, drawings, reports, and technical submissions.
  • Working across a portfolio of varied multi-disciplinary projects simultaneously.
  • Collaborating with clients, stakeholders, and internal teams to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Supporting site-based activities on an ad hoc basis, including supervision and monitoring contractor compliance with contract requirements.

About The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Highways Engineer to join WSP Local Government teams based in either our Exeter or Taunton offices. You will work within a collaborative team delivering a wide range of significant highways, bridges, and infrastructure projects for several local authority clients across the county. You will be supported by colleagues from across WSP who provide additional resources and specialist expertise to deliver high‑quality services.
