Job summary

WSP in Lewes is seeking a Senior Highway Engineer to join the Local Government team. The role can mix home and in-office work from our Lewes office in East Sussex.

You will lead highway design across multi-disciplinary projects, ensuring delivery to budget, timelines, and standards while mentoring junior staff and supporting project pricing and documentation. This role offers varied schemes with client collaboration and site supervision as needed.

Qualifications

• A degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent experience in highway design.
• Chartered Engineer preferred, or working towards IEng/CEng with a relevant institute.
• Knowledge and experience of highway design on multi-disciplinary projects and/or drainage systems.
• Experience with road geometry, roundabouts, junctions, inclusive active travel, and drainage systems.
• Familiarity with Design Manual for Roads & Bridges, Local Authority guidance and drawing production for contracts.
• Ability to use or direct the use of Civils 3D, OpenRoads, InfoDrainage and/or PDS.

Responsibilities

• Leading on development of highway designs on multi-disciplinary projects through all stages of the project life cycle.
• Ensuring projects are delivered to budget, programme, technical standards and legal requirements.
• Mentoring and developing junior staff and helping them progress professionally.
• Support Project Managers in planning, pricing, deliverables and cost estimation.
• Check, certify and issue designs, documents, approvals and reports.
• Manage a portfolio of varied multi-disciplinary projects and coordinate resources.
• Collaborate with client, stakeholders and internal teams to deliver schemes.
• Provide ad hoc site supervision and monitor contractor compliance with the contract.

A little more about your role…

We are looking to appoint a Senior Highway Engineer into our WSP Local Government team. The role is based from our Lewes office (East Sussex), with flexible working allowing for a mix of home and in-office working.

Reporting into the Infrastructure ImprovementsTeam Lead, you will provide highways design and consultancy services as part of our WSP team in East Sussex. We are passionate about supporting Local Authorities to deliver improvements for local communities, prioritising Active Travel and caring about the future of mobility. We have a strong track record of working closely with our clients and this role provides a great opportunity to have a pivotal role within Communities and help support and steer its growth going forward.

The type of work you will undertake is extremely varied but the core responsibilities include:

• Leading on the development of highway designs on multi-disciplinary projects through all stages of the project life cycle.
• Being responsible for ensuring your projects are delivered to budget, programme, technical standards and legal requirements.
• Mentoring and developing junior staff; helping them to develop professionally and to progress their careers.
• Provide support to Project Managers within the design team in planning, programming, technical input to the pricing of project briefs, proposals, deliverables and cost estimation.
• Be responsible for checking, certifying and authorising for issue designs, documents, approvals, and reports.
• Being active on a portfolio of varied multi-disciplinary projects at any given time.
• Coordinate engineering and technician resources to deliver work packages for our client.
• Work collaboratively with client, key stakeholders and internal teams, as necessary to deliver the schemes/projects.
• On adhoc basis, support our projects with site supervision, monitoring Contractor's compliance with the contract and ensuring works are in line with the works Information.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…

• A passion for design and developing innovative solutions, demonstrating initiative and ingenuity to solve engineering problems.
• A degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent experience within a highway design role.
• Chartered Engineer preferred, or working towards IEng or CEng status with a relevant professional institute.
• Knowledge and experience of highway design on multi-disciplinary projects and/or drainage systems at various stages of the project life cycle. Specific experience in specialisms including: road geometry, roundabouts, at-grade and grade separated junctions, inclusive active travel, highway drainage systems, road restraint systems, traffic sign and road marking design.
• Knowledge of the relevant design codes such as the Design Manual for Roads & Bridges, Manual for Streets, TSRGD, Local Authority design guidance and are well versed in the preparation of drawings for contract documentation and technical approvals including the application of departures from standard.
• The ability to use or direct and check the use of relevant software including Autodesk Civils 3D, Bentley OpenRoads Designer, InfoDrainage and/or PDS.
• Experience of complying with Designers Duties under CDM regulations.
