Job summary

Think Recruitment is recruiting an experienced Highway Maintenance Officer for a leading organisation in Cambridge. The role oversees reactive, preventative and cyclical highway maintenance across Cambridgeshire with regular depot and site visits.

The candidate will manage contractor works, coordinate emergency responses, inspect highways, and engage with communities and elected members. 37 hours per week, £250 per day, start ASAP, until March 2027.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years' experience in Highways & Transport in a similar operational role.
• Significant experience coordinating reactive highway maintenance and emergency responses.
• Must be a qualified Highway Safety Inspector with an in-date certificate to evidence this.
• Experience inspecting highway defects in line with set policies and procedures.
• Experience managing customer reports and enquiries through a digital system.

Experienced and professional Highway Maintenance Officer required to work with a leading and highly reputable organisation In Cambridge.

My client requires an experienced Highway Maintenance Officer to join their highways team on an ongoing temporary contract, overseeing and managing reactive, preventative and cyclical highway maintenance works across Cambridgeshire. This is an operational role requiring regular attendance at a local depot and site visits across the county.

Location: Cambridge / Cambridgeshire

Pay: £250 per day

Hours: 37 hours per week, flexible between 07:00 - 19:00

Start Date: ASAP

Duration: Until March 2027

Highway Maintenance Officer

• Oversee and manage reactive, preventative and cyclical highway maintenance works across Cambridgeshire.
• Carry out routine highway inspections and identify defects requiring repair or further investigation.
• Manage customer reports and enquiries through digital systems and respond to highway defects in line with set policies and procedures.
• Investigate reported highway faults, including carrying out site observations, measurements and fact-finding where required.
• Coordinate emergency responses to highway incidents including flooding, traffic collisions, vehicle fires and oil spills.
• Work closely with contractors to scope, order and manage highway maintenance works through to completion.
• Establish costs, consider traffic management requirements and monitor contractor performance.
• Plan and coordinate works to minimise disruption to the highway network and ensure urgent works are prioritised.
• Liaise proactively with local communities, Parish and Town Councils and elected members regarding highway works and local priorities.
• Keep customers, communities and relevant stakeholders informed of works and progress.
• Act as a front-line representative on the highway network when responding to incidents and maintenance issues.
• Ensure highway works are managed in accordance with relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
• Work collaboratively with internal teams and external contractors to support effective delivery of highway maintenance services.
• Occasionally participate in out-of-hours emergency response where required.
• This is an operational role and requires regular site-based working across the county.
• Ability to occasionally work outside standard office hours when required.

Requirements

• Minimum 5 years' experience working within Highways & Transport in a similar operational role.
• Significant experience undertaking reactive highway maintenance, including coordinating emergency responses.
• Must be a qualified Highway Safety Inspector with an in-date certificate/qualification to evidence this.
• Experience reactively inspecting highway defects in line with set policies and procedures.
• Experience managing customer reports and enquiries through a digital system.
• Strong understanding of highway maintenance, construction, drainage and relevant highway legislation.
• Experience working with contractors and managing highway maintenance works.
• Demonstrable experience engaging with and proactively managing elected members.
• Excellent communication, organisation and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work autonomously and prioritise competing demands.
• Must hold a valid driving licence and have access to a vehicle for site visits.
• Must be able to attend and work from a depot within Cambridgeshire a minimum of 4 days per week.
